  • Patent number: 4577492
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for analysis of a sample of matter for multiple organic constituents and elemental sulfur in a single process. The method involves passage of a fluid sample through a first separations zone for retention of a first organic constituent, passage through a second separations zone for separation of the remaining organic constituents and sulfur, and quantitative determination of each constituent of interest including elemental sulfur.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 18, 1984
Date of Patent: March 25, 1986
    Assignee: Phillips Petroleum Company
Inventors: Albert G. Holba, Susanne B. Doe, William B. Hughes
  • Patent number: 4576627
Abstract: A process is provided for the recovery of one or more useful products including fertilizer, salt, and/or purified process water from brines. The source of the brines can be oil field wastes, seawater, or other inland brine sources. Phosphoric acid is initially added to the brine followed by addition of ammonia or a basic form of potassium. The resulting precipitate is useful as a fertilizer. The remaining salt in the brine may then be removed and recovered along with purified process water.

  • Patent number: 4463096
Abstract: The geochemical oil prospecting method is disclosed in which a crude oil sample is analyzed for the presence of distinctive patterns of aromatic sulfur compounds which are indicative of the petroleum source rock type. Using relative proportions of benzothiophenes, dibenzothiophene, isomeric methyl dibenzothiophenes, dimethyl- and trimethydibenzothiophenes a crude oil can be identified as having a carbonate or siliciclastic source. The information obtained can be used in combination with geological and seismic studies to determine potential oil locations.
