    Abstract: The present invention provides an at least partially coated fiber strand comprising a plurality of glass fibers having a coating composition on at least a portion of at least one of the glass fibers, the coating composition comprising at least one coating comprising greater than 20 weight percent on a total solids basis of a plurality of particles selected from inorganic particles, organic hollow particles, composite particles, and mixtures of any of the foregoing, wherein the plurality of particles have a Mohs' hardness value which does not exceed the Mohs' hardness value of the glass fibers.

    Abstract: The present invention provides non-heat cleaned glass fiber fabrics comprising resin compatible coatings that offer higher tensile strengths than corresponding fabrics that have been heat cleaned and silane finished. These fabrics can be used in a wide variety of applications, such as reinforcements for composites such as printed circuit boards. In one nonlimiting embodiment, the invention provides a non-heat cleaned fabric comprising a plurality of fiber strands in a warp direction and a fill direction, each fiber strand comprising a plurality of E-glass fiber, and having a resin compatible coating composition on at least a portion of a surface of at least one fiber strand, wherein the fabric has a tensile strength of at least 267 Newtons when measured in the warp direction or fill direction. Although not required, the fabric also has a tensile strength of at least 1.5 times that of a corresponding fabric that is heat cleaned by heating the corresponding fabric to a temperature of at least 380° C.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a method of forming a loom beam comprising: (A) unwinding at least one warp yarn from at least one section beam comprising a plurality of warp yarns, wherein the at least one warp yarn comprises at least one fiber comprising a resin compatible coating on at least a portion of a surface thereof; (B) applying heat to the at least one fiber; and (C) winding the at least one warp yarn with the at least one fiber onto a loom beam, wherein the at least one fiber on the loom beam is essentially free of slashing size. In one nonlimiting embodiment of the invention, positioning comprises positioning a plurality of section beams, each comprising a plurality of warp yarns, and at least one warp yarn of each section beam comprises at least one glass fiber comprising a resin compatible coating on at least a portion of a surface thereof.

    Abstract: An aqueous starch oil sizing composition is provided which produces improved processibility in woven and non-woven applications. The sizing combines a high amylose corn starch which has been derivatized with propylene oxide, with a low amylose highly crosslinked corn starch. The sizing also includes lubricants which may be oils or waxes and a lubricant which is the salt of a polyamino functional polyamide resin. Other emusifiers, humectants, lubricants, defoamers, and biocides may be present. The size also includes a silane coupling agent such as gamma glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy silane which can be hydrolyzed. Strands of glass fiber which have been treated with this size have shown a reduced tendency to shed the size from the strands, a reduction in the buildup of broken filaments or "fuzz" on processing equipment and reduced strand breakage.
