Publication number: 20240119315Abstract: A layered machine learning system for processing data. The machine learning system comprises decision trees with different depths. An iterative training process is performed on the layered machine learning system to determine the structures of the decision trees based on prior predictions. The fitted decision trees are further configured to update leaf values with a gradient boosting method. By cumulating the predictions of decisions trees in prior iterations, interaction effects are modeled among different depths within the layered machine learning system.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 6, 2023Publication date: April 11, 2024Inventors: Rachael MCNAUGHTON, Richard BLAND, Colin TOWERS, William JAMES

Publication number: 20110217682Abstract: This invention of mine is perfect for people to prepare their bodies for the transition from a non-horse rider to a successful rider. Actually, it is used for starting to learn control, and develop the strength as well as reflexes, particularly for children needing to reduce weakness to ride. It helps the training for the tough horse riding actions. Often children never achieve to learn to ride because muscle weakness is a barrier. To do this I have created apparatus to finely tune balance and reflexes as well as to strengthen those muscles essential for horse riding. I've designed a small inflatable ball that is elevated up to an adjustable height and retained within supportive framework above a big base with curved steel runners. The inflatable ball is unstable so that the user Scan try and balance, sit or bounce on it as well as train the postures and motions for each of the horses' strides. My invention, I believe, is new.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 13, 2010Publication date: September 8, 2011Inventor: Luke William Bland

Patent number: 7715934Abstract: An input profile is generated from an input audio file using a measurable attribute that was also used to generate reference profiles from reference audio files. The input profile is then subjected to a process that was also used to generate a reference profiles tree, which is structured as a sparse binary tree, from the reference profiles. As a result of the process, information of reference profiles having similar characteristics as the input profile, with respect to the measurable attribute, are retrieved from resulting nodes of the reference profiles tree. The input profile is then compared with this subset of the reference profiles, representing potential matches, to determine that either it matches one of the reference profiles, or that it is a spoof, or that it does not match any of the reference profiles.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2004Date of Patent: May 11, 2010Assignee: Macrovision CorporationInventors: William Bland, James Edward Moore

Publication number: 20070076074Abstract: A printer and a method are provided for determining a type of print medium in a printer. The method comprises the steps of: obtaining a first set of reflectance data from a first side of the print medium; obtaining a second set of reflectance data from a second side of the print medium; comparing the first set of reflectance data to the second set of reflectance data; and categorizing the print medium as being in one of a plurality of print medium categories based upon the comparison of the first set of reflectance data and second set of reflection data.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 5, 2005Publication date: April 5, 2007Inventors: Hongsheng Zhang, Christopher Wykoff, David Poirier, Gerald Brown, James Mott, William Bland, Chris Armijo

Publication number: 20070062572Abstract: A photovoltaic system for an electronic device. The system includes a first photovoltaic cell primarily oriented toward the sun and a second photovoltaic cell primarily oriented toward a light source of the electronic device. The first and second photovoltaic cells are in electrical communication to provide electricity to the electronic device. The second photovoltaic cell recaptures some of the electricity used to power the electronic device and reuses this electricity in the photovoltaic system.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 19, 2005Publication date: March 22, 2007Inventors: Lee Judd, William Bland

Publication number: 20060103691Abstract: A fluid ejection device and a printhead including one or more such fluid ejection devices are provided. The fluid ejection device includes a substrate having a first nozzle array and a second nozzle array, each array having a plurality of nozzles and being arranged along a first direction, the first nozzle array being arranged spaced apart in a second direction from the second nozzle array. A first fluid delivery pathway is in fluid communication with the first nozzle array, and a second fluid delivery pathway is in fluid communication with the second nozzle array. Publication number: 20050091167Abstract: An interdiction system includes software agents masquerading as nodes in a decentralized network, a query matcher that receives search results captured by the software agents and reports matches with protected files back to the software agents, and a central coordinating authority that coordinates activities of the software agents by sending instructions to the software agents specifying actions to be taken. Possible activities and related interdicting methods include manipulating search results before forwarding them on in the network, quarantining selected nodes in the network, performing file impersonations such as transferring synthesized decoys, performing file transfer attenuation, and hash spoofing.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 18, 2004Publication date: April 28, 2005Applicant: MACROVISION CORPORATIONInventors: James Moore, William Bland, Scott Francis, Neil King, James Patterson, Usha Srinivasan, Paul Widden

Patent number: 6533976Abstract: A method of fabricating a discontinuous-fiber, ceramic matrix green-state composite component. The method includes preparation of a mixture of discontinuous fibers, in a quantity equal to about 100% of a desired end-product fiber quantity thereof, and a polymer-derived ceramic precursor resin in an excess quantity greater than about 150% of a desired end-product resin quantity thereof. The mixture so prepared then is introduced into a cavity of a molding tool and a vacuum is applied to the cavity through a vacuum aperture leading from the cavity. The mixture is drawn toward the vacuum aperture and consequently compacts a quantity of fibers within the cavity at the aperture site such that the fibers function as a filter to efficiently retain within the cavity fibers within the original mixture while removing under vacuum the excess resin that provided an effective vehicle for carrying and dispersing the discontinuous fibers.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2000Date of Patent: March 18, 2003Assignee: Northrop Grumman CorporationInventors: Thomas Edward Strasser, Mark William Bland, Steven Donald Atmur

Patent number: 6501531Abstract: A photofinishing system and method for utilizing otherwise wasted space on a sheet of photographic paper. The system includes a printer such as an ink jet printer, laser printer or digital silver-halide system for printing a set of desired images on a larger sheet of photographic paper. The system nests the images on the larger sheet so as to minimize wasted space. The amount of wasted space is determined and, if the space is large enough, the system prints an extra image in the space. The extra image can comprise a diagnostic pattern, promotional literature or an additional copy of at least one of the desired images.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2001Date of Patent: December 31, 2002Assignee: Phogenix Imaging, LLCInventors: Dave Clark, Michael Puyot, Rajan Ramaswamy, William Bland, John Manard
