  • Patent number: 4688663
Abstract: A servo mechanical control for efficiently bringing a rotating turbine wheel of a turbine engine having a multi-stage stator assembly to a non-rotating condition and for maintaining the turbine wheel in a non-rotating condition. The servo mechanical control includes a detector for detecting the direction of rotation of the turbine wheel and a control device interconnected with the multi-stage stator assembly and operable, in response to the detection of the turbine wheel in either predetermined direction, to displace the multi-stage stator assembly to a position causing a reverse torque on the turbine wheel. The detector preferably consists of at least one brake body pivotally interconnected with the vehicle and selectively operable to engage the output shaft of the turbine wheel. When engaged with the output shaft, the brake body is pivoted in response to angular motion of the turbine wheel.

  • Patent number: 4550563
Abstract: Pressurized comminuted solid fuel particles are mechanically reground in a fuel injector prior to being radially injected in a swirling motion into a combustor where the fuel is mixed with oxidizing fluid in a swirling motion that is opposite to the swirling motion imparted to the solid fuel particles and burned to form both solid and gaseous products of combustion. The products of combustion are passed through an inertia separator where the solid products of combustion are removed by inertia. Means are also provided for injecting liquid or gaseous fuels into the combustor to assist in the combustion process and in meeting varying load demands on the engine.

  • Patent number: 4492520
Abstract: A turbine having a radial inlet to the turbine wheel is provided with a multi-stage stator wherein the vanes of its separate stages are fixed at different angles of incidence. The stator is mounted for movement so that each of its stages may be positioned in alignment with said opening. The vanes of one stage of the stator are inclined relative to the inlet to produce forward rotation of the turbine wheel while those of another stage are inclined oppositely to produce reverse rotation thereof. The system includes means for positioning the stator so that the vanes of two adjacent stages thereof are located in partial alignment with the inlet opening so as to regulate the power output of the turbine to a neutral state.

  • Patent number: 4345527
Abstract: A solid fuel particle and air control device for use with combustion systems for a gas turbine engine and the like is disclosed. The device has a first housing with an inlet passage for receiving solid fuel particles. The first housing is mounted on a second housing with a blind cavity. A first passage extends through the second housing so as to intersect the blind cavity to permit flow communication therebetween. Solid fuel particles from the inlet passage of the first housing are metered and transfered to the blind cavity. A fluid pressure source is injected into the first passage in the secondary housing so as to entrain the solid fuel particles in the air as to form a uniform air entrained mixture. The air entrained mixture is then ejected out of the first passage in the second housing to a duct which communicates with the combustion system of the gas turbine engine where the air entrained solid fuel particle mixture is burned.

  • Patent number: 4338782
Abstract: Pressurized communited solid fuel particles are mechanically reground in a fuel injector prior to being radially injected in a swirling motion into a combustor where the fuel is mixed with oxidizing fluid in a swirling motion that is opposite to the swirling motion imported to the solid fuel particles and burned to form both solid and gaseous products of combustion. The products of combustion are passed through separator where the solid products of combustor are removed by inertia. Means are also provided for injecting liquid or gaseous fuels into the combustor to assist in the combustion process and meeting varying load demands on the engine.
