  • Publication number: 20080149172
Abstract: A solar collector including a reflective surface formed along an axis and a structure composed of at least one cementitious material that is coupled to and supports the reflective surface. The optic structure is made strong and light by the addition of a filler material within the cement. One or more bearings, photovoltaics, and secondary optics make the solar collector useful in a wide variety of applications and environmental conditions.

  • Patent number: 7019895
Abstract: A microscope stage providing improved optical performance. A carriage for supporting an object has a transparent portion for receiving the object and permitting trans-illumination thereof. A base supports the carriage, at least a portion of the base comprising a transparent material to permit illumination of the specimen there through. Bearings disposed between the base and the carriage support the carriage on the base and permit relative movement thereof. The base has a dovetail cross sectional shape with bearings between the top of the carriage and the base and between the sidewalls of the carriage and the base. A cover is coupled to the carriage so as to transfer force thereto without imparting a significant movement thereto. A mechanism connected to the cover for moving the carriage relative to the base is disposed at a position offset from the axis of lateral symmetry of the carriage and base.

  • Patent number: 6905300
Abstract: A slide loading mechanism utilizes compressed air as the transport medium to move the slides from a magazine to the stage of a microscope. The stage is provided with a carriage moving horizontally along a direct path between the stage and the magazine. A conveyor coupled to the carriage includes a tongue suitable for positioning under the slide of interest in the magazine when the carriage is at one end of its travel path, so that the slide may be picked up for translation to the stage of the microscope. When the carriage is moved to the opposite end of its travel path, the tongue is completely removed from the magazine, which may be freely moved vertically by an elevator to align another slide for processing.

  • Patent number: 5813809
Abstract: A threaded connection between adjoining male/female surfaces is produced by mating a plastic insert embedded in one surface with threads machined on the other surface. The plastic insert is pressed against the machined threads and deformed to provide conforming meshing threads in the insert, thereby producing a threaded engagement between the two surfaces. Preferably, the insert is sufficiently wide to overlap multiple machined threads and yield a stable, strip-resistant engagement. By providing at least three such inserts evenly distributed around the preexisting threads, an axially stable, screwable threaded connection is produced between the two surfaces that does not require precise machining or special tooling for unconventional threads. Although the inserts are preferably used in the female surface for ease of access, they can be used advantageously in equivalent fashion in the male surface of the screwable threaded connection.
