    Abstract: A composite touch fastener has an elongated, sheet-form resin substrate, a fibrous loop strip partially encapsulated in, or otherwise permanently attached to, resin of the substrate, and an array of loop-engageable fastener elements integrally molded with resin of the substrate. The loop strip forms a discrete band of hook-engageable, free-standing loops along the length of the substrate, and has a substantially constant fiber density across its width. The array of fastener elements is arranged in a discrete band of fastener elements extending longitudinally along the substrate. The fastener product is useful as a repeated use bag closure, with a pair of grooves and a graspable rib integrally molded into the substrate between the fastener elements and loops. The center portion of the closure seals the bag until it is torn away to expose the mating bands of loops and fastener elements.

    Abstract: A method is provided for forming an array of fastener elements extending from a common base. The method includes delivering moldable resin to a mold having a mold surface from which a plurality of fixed mold cavities extend inwardly, each mold cavity having a throat extending from the mold surface and a bowl extending from the throat to a bowl rim, a protrusion of the mold extending into the bowl, thereby filling the mold cavities and forming the common base; solidifying the resin in the cavities to form the fastener elements; and removing the solidified fastener elements from their corresponding fixed mold cavities by pulling the common base away from the mold surface.

    Abstract: Injection molding fastener element products employing a series of laterally moveable mold plates that define, in part, mold cavities for fastener elements. The laterally moveable mold plates move into open spaces provided by mold plates that retract or project in a direction normal to the base of the fastener product. This at least partially opens the fastener cavities to release the fastener elements.

    Abstract: A fastener strap sheet is provided that includes (a) a sheet material having a first surface and a second surface substantially opposite the first surface, the first surface being constructed for face-to-face cooperating engagement with the second surface; and (b) a pattern of cuts extending through the sheet material, the cuts defining an array of fastener straps, each fastener strap including an elongated body having a predetermined width, and a head portion at one end of the body having a width greater than the predetermined width and defining an opening through which the strap body can be pulled. The array of straps define a first set of straps and a second set of straps, the heads of the first set, being located on a first side of the array and the heads of the second set being located on a second, opposite side of the array, and the bodies of the first set being directly bordered by and parallel with the bodies of the second set, in an interdigitated arrangement.

    Abstract: A fastener for engaging loops includes a base with a field of fastener elements molded with and extending from the base. The fastener elements are constructed to engage loops of a mating loop component to form a releasable fastener. The fastener elements comprise hooks and spikes, interspersed among the hooks, which extend at an acute angle from the base. By arranging the hooks and spikes in differing directions on the base, increased shear strength is provided in corresponding directions. Molds and methods for forming the fastener are also disclosed.
