Patent number: 4640812Abstract: A portable, microprocessor-based test instrument for the calibration, check testing, and checkout of nuclear power reactor systems under simulated operating conditions. The instrument includes a master microprocessor bus having direct communication to interchangeable plug-in printed circuit boards. Applications to which the invention may be put include rod control simulation and analysis, neutron monitoring system analysis, and rod block monitoring system simulation and analysis. The test instrument electronically interconnects at any of a plurality of points within a reactor control and monitoring system. The electrical network from the point of interconnection to the core rods is disabled and the test instrument, receives serial control command signals as would the disabled portion of the network. The test instrument also generates appropriate acknowledgements and response signals. Alternatively, a test instrument can generate faulty response signals to simulate improper command responses.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1984Date of Patent: February 3, 1987Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Steven D. Patent number: 4628277Abstract: A femtoammeter is disclosed which resists noise induced reversed bias of the ammeter amplifier and avoids long time constant recovery with unusually high measurement accuracy. The amplifier ammeter has a feedback loop which is provided with paired opposingly faced log diodes in parallel across the feedback circuit. Transients of negative or positive bias are accommodated without biasing the amplifier to a reverse polarity and having unacceptably long time constant recovery. Conventional temperature compensation, not possible with the parallel reversed diode configuration, is supplied by heat sinking the ammeter components, providing a log diode temperature sensor for the heat sinked components and controlling the heat sink operating temperature with a thermoelectric cooler. The temperature sensing log diodes output to a computer lookup table. The same temperature sensing log diode outputs to a bridge circuit operating the thermoelectric cooler.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1985Date of Patent: December 9, 1986Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: William D. Patent number: 4590472Abstract: The present invention described a signal conditioner. A thermocouple produces a signal that is present at a summing node input of a conditioning amplifier. The conditioning amplifier has a plurality of selectable gain values by which amplifier sensitivity may be varied to complement that of the thermocouple. Provision is made at the summing node input of the summing amplifier for thermocouple cold junction compensation and range offset. The present invention finds application in monitoring thermal conditions in an industrial process, such as a nuclear reactor. The high degree of precision and reliability required in such processes is maintained by including a test circuit which provides a selectable test pulse to the summing node input of the conditioning amplifier. One aspect of the present invention is the provision for testing during actual circuit operation in a process and irrespective of selected conditioning amplifier sensitivity.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1982Date of Patent: May 20, 1986Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Michael R. Benson, William D. Hill

Patent number: 4584165Abstract: A redundant reactivity control system, operating in conjunction with other systems in a nuclear power plant, to mitigate the potential consequences of an anticipated transient without scram event, is described. The invention interfaces to a boiling water nuclear reactor with the reactor's neutron monitoring system, standby liquid control system, control rod drive system, reactor recirculation system, reactor water clean-up feed water control system, and control room and local panels. Two divisionally separated control panels include associated detection and actuation logic and the necessary interface logic to other systems to perform the specific functions in response to an anticipated transient without scram event. Each separate division includes two identical channels. Actuation of any associated reactor system by the invention requires the agreement of the two channels within a division.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1983Date of Patent: April 22, 1986Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Patricia A. Wilson, Kenneth B. Stackhouse, Sujit Chakraborty, Walter S. Ching, William D. Hill, John B. Knepp, James P. Ward, Warren L. Zediker

Patent number: 4574068Abstract: A universal logic card is disclosed which contains both pre-programmed functional circuitry for actuating channel logic and dedicated test circuitry for system controller test and for constant and looping interrogation of the pre-programmed channel logic in absence of self-test system controller test. The disclosed card resides as a channel in a self-test system for a nuclear power plant supplementing the nuclear reaction protection system. The card is pre-programmed in digital logic to act equivalent to an analog circuit during actual plant operation. Additionally, the card responds to system controlled surveillance of the nuclear protection system. In system controlled surveillance, a central microprocessor serially addresses system circuit cards such as the one disclosed and loads these cards at predetermined input points with test commands. The addressed cards are thereafter simultaneously activated by a system-wide command.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1985Date of Patent: March 4, 1986Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: William D. Hill, William A. Mercanti, Jr., Christian K. Apple, Gary S. Loomis

Patent number: 4556329Abstract: A resistor temperature device (RTD) trip unit is described. The RTD monitors thermal conditions at an industrial process location, such as in a nuclear reactor. Resistance of the RTD varies in accordance with temperature at the monitored process location. An amplifier circuit produces an output signal, corresponding to the variations in RTD resistance, which signal operates a plurality of relay circuits. The relay circuits variously report process conditions such as failure, the obtaining of a preselected level, etc. Additionally, metering provides a continuous analog indication of thermal conditions at the monitored process locations. To correct for non-linearity inherent in the RTD resistance slope, a recursive feedback path is coupled between the RTD amplifier stage and an RTD current source, such that a decreasing resistance slope produces a complementary increase in current supply to the RTD. The result is a linear output signal from the RTD amplifier.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1982Date of Patent: December 3, 1985Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Michael R. Benson, William D. Hill
