Patent number: 8296774Abstract: A server farm includes a plurality of server devices. The plurality of server devices includes a plurality of topology service endpoints and a plurality of target service endpoints. A client computing system sends a topology service request to one of the topology service endpoints. In response, the topology service endpoint sends target service endpoint Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) to the client computing system. When a client application at the client computing system needs to send a target service request to one of the target service endpoints, the client computing system applies a load balancing algorithm to select one of the target service endpoint URIs. The client computing system then sends a target service request to the target service endpoint identified by the selected one of the target service endpoint URIs. In this way, the client computing system may use a load balancing algorithm appropriate for the client application.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2009Date of Patent: October 23, 2012Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Umesh Unnikrishnan, Kshamta Jerath, William D. Patent number: 8224804Abstract: A computing system hosts a plurality of websites, a plurality of external data sources, and a search service. External resources in each of the external data sources are partitioned among a plurality of external partitions. The search service automatically generates an index comprising index entries. The index entries are partitioned among a plurality of index partitions, each associated with one or more of the websites. For each given index partition, the index entries in the given index partition map terms to resources in the given set of resources that contain the terms. The given set of resources includes web pages in a given set of websites associated with the given index partition and external resources in external partitions used by the given set of websites. The search service uses the index entries in given index partition to identify resources in the given set of resources containing query terms.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2009Date of Patent: July 17, 2012Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Umesh Unnikrishnan, Jason M. Publication number: 20110197418Abstract: Mounting system of solar panels (both photovoltaic and solar water heating) using cables and anchored to the sides of the building or to ground mounts is described. The mounting method does not require roof penetrations, minimizing potential for water leaks associated with roof penetrations. The mounting system allows for the panels to be mounted at different heights over the surface of the roof.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 6, 2011Publication date: August 18, 2011Inventors: Michael Charles Overturf, William D. Publication number: 20110037602Abstract: A tilt protection apparatus applied to electric energy generating installations, where possibility of tilting or tipping over exists. In certain installations of electric energy generating facilities, the means of energy production, such as but not limited to solar photovoltaic panels, must be mounted on support system that can be susceptible to mechanical failure due to impact, wind induced vibration, ground vibration or ground displacement. In the event of the structural tilt, the apparatus detects such condition and disconnects the means of energy generation minimizing possibility of exposure to dangerous levels of electric potential.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 7, 2010Publication date: February 17, 2011Inventors: Wojciech Marek Chrosny, Michael Charles Overturf, Robert J. Applegate, Richard G. Stine, William D. Taylor

Patent number: 6063235Abstract: A novel gas discharge apparatus for use in a plasma etching system is disclosed. Several components of the gas discharge apparatus including the annular outer chimney, annular outer chimney clamp and annular insulator collar are modified to allow increased egress of particulate matter generated by the etching process away from the substrate being figured. This increased egress results in a significant reduction of contaminants contacting the substrate surface.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1998Date of Patent: May 16, 2000Assignee: PlasmaSil, LLCInventor: William D. Taylor

Patent number: 5391252Abstract: A plasma assembly including an RF head extending into a vacuum chamber and an associated electrode for generating a confined plasma. The assembly includes a sidewall within the chamber forming a plenum about the RF head. The plenum defines a volume substantially smaller than the volume of the chamber and hence, the gas pressure within the plenum is more easily monitored and controlled by the provision of make-up gas.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1994Date of Patent: February 21, 1995Assignee: Hughes Aircraft CompanyInventor: William D. Patent number: 5209291Abstract: An internally-cooled optical device 10 includes a manifold 14 having two oppositely disposed coolant input ports 18 and two oppositely disposed coolant output ports 20. The input and output ports arepositioned perpendicular to each other. The input coolant flow is divided into macro-channels 28, witheach macro-channel having an associated plurality of micro-channels 34 for carrying the coolant along a surface juxtaposed with a surface of the optical device faceplate. The micro-channels terminate in an exit plenum 36 of the macro channel. The exit plenum tapers down to an orifice 38 connected to a return header 42 for delivering the coolant to the outlet ports. The orifices of the macro-channels are sized according to the length of the micro-channels used in the macro-channel, so that each macro-channel has essentially the same pressure drop, and uniform coolant flow is provided in each macro-channel.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1991Date of Patent: May 11, 1993Assignee: Hughes Aircraft CompanyInventor: William D. Patent number: 5168924Abstract: A monochromator 18 has a thin faceplate which reduces temperature-induced distortion in a strain-free region by placing it close to a two-level heat exchanger 46, 64. The heat exchanger has a first level 46 in juxtaposition with the faceplate 22 for efficient heat extraction, and a second level 64 which establishes a constant temperature plane along a neutral bending axis of the monochromator 18. The first level heat exchanger is operated at a temperature below the zero CTE point of the silicon faceplate so that the integrated CTE of the faceplate is approximately zero. Pumps 30 and 32 are disposed respectively at the coolant inlets 26 and outlets 28 for fine-tuning the coolant pressure so that a minimal pressure across the faceplate 22 may be established to minimize bending moments on the thin faceplate.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1991Date of Patent: December 8, 1992Assignee: Hughes Danbury Optical Systems, Inc.Inventor: William D.
