Patent number: 9850555Abstract: The present application is generally directed to separation and recovery of rare earths using biomass, liposomes, and/or other materials. In some embodiments, a composition comprising rare earths is exposed to biomass, where some of the rare earths are transferred to the biomass, e.g., via absorption. The composition may then be separated from the biomass. A solution may be exposed to the biomass thereby enriching the solution in one or more rare earths, relative to other rare earths in the biomass. The solution and the biomass may then be separated, and the rare earths recovered from the solution. In some cases, this process may be repeated with different solutions, which may result in different solutions enriched in various rare earths. Similar processes may be used to separate the rare earths from thorium and uranium. Liposomes may be used instead of and/or in addition to biomass.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2014Date of Patent: December 26, 2017Assignee: President and Fellows of Harvard CollegeInventors: William Daley Bonificio, David Clarke

Publication number: 20160017459Abstract: The present application is generally directed to separation and recovery of rare earths using biomass, liposomes, and/or other materials. In some embodiments, a composition comprising rare earths is exposed to biomass, where some of the rare earths are transferred to the biomass, e.g., via absorption. The composition may then be separated from the biomass. A solution may be exposed to the biomass, such that some of the rare earths are released from the biomass into the solution, thereby enriching the solution in one or more rare earths, relative to other rare earths in the biomass. The solution and the biomass may then be separated, and the rare earths recovered from the solution. In some cases, this process may be repeated with different solutions, e.g., having differences in pH or ionic concentration, which may result in different solutions enriched in various rare earths. In addition, in some embodiments, similar processes may be used to separate the rare earths from thorium and uranium.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 10, 2014Publication date: January 21, 2016Inventors: William Daley Bonificio, David Clarke

Patent number: 9023176Abstract: An apparatus for laminating a fabric material to a part broadly comprises a cutting element, a heating system, a vertical pressure unit, and a compaction roller assembly. The cutting element may cut scrap material from the sides of the fabric material. The heating system may heat the fabric material after the material exits the vacuum conveyor assembly. The vertical pressure unit may apply a downward force on the compaction roller assembly, which may receive the fabric material and press the fabric material against a surface of the part. The compaction roller assembly may include a roller operable to have a variable curvature along its longitudinal axis and an actuating device operable to apply a variable torque to opposing ends of the roller to vary the curvature of the roller.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2012Date of Patent: May 5, 2015Assignee: Spirit AeroSystems, Inc.Inventors: C. Timothy Harbaugh, Patrick William Daley, Teddy Lee Kellums, W. Robert Nelson

Publication number: 20060036907Abstract: An area- and product-independent test automation system and a method for synchronizing testing of multiple devices are disclosed. The test automation system may include a test sequence being written in a script language common to different products or test areas in an electronic component manufacturing or testing facility. Executable test modules control the testing of individual devices under test. The test sequence includes commands that reference the test modules. A sequencer reads the commands in the test sequence and executes the corresponding test modules. A test messaging medium receives commands from the modules and stores test status information. Device-specific controllers monitor the test messaging medium for commands and communicate with test hardware to execute the commands. The device-specific controllers also write test status information to the test messaging medium.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 11, 2004Publication date: February 16, 2006Inventors: Kevin Inscoe, Joseph Allgeyer, Roderick Parsons, Arthur Everett, William Daley, Donald Hon, Frank Kavanagh
