Abstract: A method, information handling system, and software are disclosed for creating a RAID set from a plurality of hard disks. A performance profile for the plurality of hard disks is determined. The performance profile associated with each of the hard disks is stored at a location on the hard disk. The performance profiles on one or more of the hard disks are read. A RAID set is created. The RAID set includes a subset of the hard disks. The disks in the RAID set have similar performance profiles.

Abstract: An information handling system for managing local storage resources includes multiple client nodes, each with an associated local storage resource. An intelligent switch includes a read management module operable to receive a read request for a selected memory block from a client node and compare the read request with a read management table. The read management module sends a Unique ID associated with the selected memory block if the read management table indicates that the selected memory block is stored in a local storage resource. If the selected memory block is not stored in a local storage resource, the read management module assigns a Unique ID to the selected memory block and stores the Unique ID in the read management table if the. The local storage network monitor receives the Unique ID associated with the a requested memory block and broadcasts a request to the other client nodes to locate the requested memory block.

Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for the implementation of self-describing configurations in storage array. Each storage drive of the storage array includes at a defined location in the storage drive a self-describing function. When the storage controller receives a request to access a data block in the storage array, the storage controller executes the self-describing function with reference to the requested data block. The result of the executed self-describing function is an identification of the physical location of the data block within the storage array.

Abstract: A system and method for providing automatic data restoration after a storage device failure are disclosed. An agent module detects a failure at a logical unit located at a primary storage device. The agent module locates backup data from the failed logical unit that is stored on a backup storage device and transfers the backup data from the backup storage device to a spare logical unit located on the primary storage device. The agent module then maps the spare logical unit to an address associated with a host in response to detecting the failure at the logical unit.
