  • Patent number: 4938916
Abstract: A neutron radiography system having a high energy neutron generator (100) of the type comprising an ion accelerator (106) and a tritium target (110) located downstream of the accelerator. The generator is disclosed in a housing (22) containing a moderator medium (140) adapted to absorb part of the energy of the neutrons, thereby creating thermal neutrons. A neutron flux booster (130) comprised of a high neutron cross section material, such as depleted uranium, is disposed between the target and the moderator medium such that collisions of high energy neutrons produced at the target will collide with the uranium to release additional high energy neutrons from the booster into the moderator medium. A collimator (40) is disposed in communication with the moderator material for discharging thermal neutrons from the moderator medium.

  • Patent number: 4830813
Abstract: A lightweight, low energy neutron radiography inspection device (20) includes an inspection head (22) with a sealed tube neutron generator (44) using a deuterium target (110) for emitting relatively low energy neutrons. A moderating fluid (140) within the head is used to thermalize the neutrons emitted from the neutron source. A collimator (40) directs the thermalized neutrons to produce a thermal neutron radiograph. The relatively low energy neutrons produced by the neutron generator permit the reduction in volume of moderating fluid required and thus the use of a smaller, more maneuverable, inspection head.

  • Patent number: 4604649
Abstract: A radiographic image is formed of a workpiece irradiated by neutron or X-ray energy. A radiophosphorescent screen is positioned adjacent the workpiece to form a scintillation pattern. The radiation may consist of thermal neutrons radiation from which gamma radiation has been substantially removed. The image is stored upon the semi-conductor target of a television camera.

  • Patent number: 4587555
Abstract: A radiographic imaging system (10) includes first and second housing segments (10a, 10b) with the second housing segment (11b) having a low-light-sensitivity television camera (13) mounted therein. The first housing segment (11a) has a radioluminescent screen structure (20) fitted within an opening (16). A workpiece (24) is positioned adjacent the radioluminescent screen (20) and between the screen and a source of radiation (25a, 25b). The screen structure includes means for producing a scintillation shadowgraph pattern in response to impingement on the screen of radiation directed through the object. The camera (13) has its optical input section directed toward the radioluminescent screen for receiving the scintillation shadowgraph pattern and has a target means for forming charge patterns corresponding to the scintillation patterns produced on the radioluminescent screen and scanning means for scanning the target means to generate an optical signal corresponding to the charge pattern formed on the target.

  • Patent number: 4582999
Abstract: In a system for generating thermal (14 MeV) neutrons containing an ionic accelerator, a novel thermal neutron collimator for producing a beam of collimated thermal neutrons is disclosed. The apparatus includes a substantially hollow collimator tube (10) having a closed, neutron permaeable inlet portion (20) communicating with a source of thermal neutrons (12) and an open outlet portion (22) disposed downstream of the inlet portion at the opposite end of the tube. The collimator walls (14,16,18) diverge outwardly toward the outlet portion of the tube and are formed of three radial layers comprising an outer layer of thermal neutron absorbing material (26) for absorbing off-axis thermal neutrons, an intermediate layer of lead (24) for absorbing X-rays and gamma rays and an inside layer of aluminum (23) for structural support.

  • Patent number: 4300054
Abstract: Disclosed is apparatus for forming and directionally positioning a neutron beam. The apparatus includes an enclosed housing rotatable about a first axis with a neutron source axially positionable on the axis of rotation of the enclosed housing but rotationally fixed with respect to the housing. The rotatable housing is carried by a vertically positionable arm carried on a mobile transport. A collimator is supported by the rotatable housing and projects into the housing to orientationally position its inlet window at an adjustably fixed axial and radial spacing from the neutron source so that rotation of the enclosed housing causes the inlet window to rotate about a circle which is a fixed axial distance from the neutron source and has the axis of rotation of the housing as its center.
