    Abstract: A sweet compound, 2-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-benzodioxan, and its salts have been prepared and are characterized by the following structural formula: ##STR1## wherein M is hydrogen or a physiologically acceptable metal cation. This compound is intensely sweet, and is useful for sweetening foods and other ingestible substances.
