Patent number: 9621207Abstract: A communication device performs a method for detecting presence of a jamming signal. The method includes retrieving a scan list comprising multiple radio channels within a first frequency range of operation of the communication device. The method further includes scanning at least a subset of the channels on the scan list to determine, for each scanned channel, whether energy that exceeds an energy threshold is detected on the scanned channel. Moreover, the method includes determining a first quantitative measure based on a first plurality scanned channels having energy that exceeds the energy threshold, and comparing the first quantitative measure to at least a first jamming signal detection threshold. Additionally, the method includes indicating, on the communication device, presence of a jamming signal when the first quantitative measure satisfies the at least a first jamming signal detection threshold.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2012Date of Patent: April 11, 2017Assignee: Google Technology Holdings LLCInventors: William E. Patent number: 8954070Abstract: A method and system for selecting a communication network by a wireless communication device (106) includes receiving (310) an identification parameter at the wireless communication device from a communication network which identifies the communication network. Next, the method compares (312) the identification parameter with a list at the wireless communication device to determine (314) service information. The service information identifies the services supported by the communication network. The method further includes comparing (316) the service information with a service-related datum at the wireless communication device that indicates the services desired by the wireless communication device. Lastly, the method includes selecting (318) the communication network for accessing a requested service if the service information matches the service-related datum.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2006Date of Patent: February 10, 2015Assignee: Google Technology Holdings LLCInventors: William E. Patent number: 8509769Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing the method are provided. The method includes operating a mobile device in a first network while a timer of the mobile device is running to prevent the mobile device from scanning for a second network. The method also includes determining a distance that the mobile device is from a reference location, where the reference location is associated with where the mobile device is prevented from scanning for the second network. Patent number: 7489913Abstract: A method for controlling diversity receivers in a wireless communication device includes the steps of: determining if the wireless communication device is experiencing poor coverage (220), using a first receiver and a second receiver for diversity (230) if the wireless communication device is experiencing poor coverage, and using the second receiver for scanning (240) if the wireless communication device is not experiencing poor coverage. Thus, diversity can be used when needed to improve reception. Both receivers, however, can be used in a non-diversity mode to reduce current drain or to speed up channel acquisition when coverage is not poor.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 2005Date of Patent: February 10, 2009Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: William E. Patent number: 7209742Abstract: Methods in communications devices and networks for reducing an infrastructure registration race condition. In one embodiment, a communications device transmits (310) a first network connection request is a first network, and after waiting a specified time interval, the communication device transmits (320) another network connection request to the first network. The communications device may determine the time interval, or it may be received (302) from the network. Alternatively, a time stamp or some other indicium is applied to the connection requests transmitted by the communications device so that a home location register or other entity may determine the order in which the requests were transmitted.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2003Date of Patent: April 24, 2007Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: William P.
