  • Patent number: 7653993
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a brush seal includes wrapping wire about spaced frames to form a pair of wire runs of multiple wire thicknesses. Two pairs of interior plates are inserted between the wire runs at an angle and in spaced relation to one another. Two pairs of plates are applied along the outside of the wire runs parallel to the pairs of interior plates, respectively. By removing the wire run outside the plates and welding along each of the opposite edges of the wire run securing an interior plate, a cut end of a wire run and an exterior plate to one another, and by cutting each wire run preferably in half, four tee shaped bristle packs are formed with the bristles extending at the appropriate angle. By cutting the tee shaped packs to length and rolling the cut pack, a brush seal is formed to the appropriate diameter.

  • Patent number: 7645117
Abstract: A rotary machine includes a rotor, a stationary machine casing extending around the rotor, and a bling assembly extending between the casing and the rotor. The machine also includes at least one rotor tip seal assembly and at least one shaft seal assembly. The seal assemblies have a groove configured to receive at least one seal ring band. A method of assembling a rotary machine is also provided. The method includes fabricating the bling assembly by providing two identical members comprising a mating surface and having a semi-circular profile. The method also includes coupling the two members together at their mating surfaces such that a circular ring is formed and such that the mating surfaces define a horizontal joint. The method further includes machining concentric, circular and annular radially inner and outer and airfoil portions within predetermined radial portions of the bling assembly.

Abstract: A method is provided for assembling a turbine engine. The method includes providing a retro-fit seal ring assembly that includes a plurality of unitary, arcuate ring segments that are circumferentially-spaced about a center axis of the ring assembly. Each of the plurality of ring segments includes a body and at least one integrally formed tooth that extends radially inward therefrom. The methods also includes extending at least one fastener through the body of each of the plurality of ring segments, and removably coupling each of the plurality of ring segments to an outer surface of a stationary component within the turbine engine using the at least one fastener.

  • Publication number: 20080193283
Abstract: A bling nozzle/carrier interface design for a steam turbine is provided wherein there is limited contact between the carrier (casing, shell) to allow for ease of assembly. There is also limited contact in strategic locations to both reduce the roll, or downstream deflection, of the inner portion and to improve disassembly due to limited contact in areas where corrosion can occur.

  • Patent number: 7384235
Abstract: A packing ring assembly is provided and includes an arcuate carrier ring segment having an aperture formed therethrough, an arcuate packing ring segment including an attachment component extending through the aperture of the carrier ring segment and movably associating with the carrier ring segment and the packing ring segment, and an actuator component disposed between the carrier ring segment and the packing ring segment and extending at least partially along the aperture. The actuator component is configured to maintain the packing ring segment in a first position relative to the carrier ring segment and to allow a movement of the packing ring segment to a second position relative to the carrier ring segment when the packing ring assembly is exposed to a pressure condition.

  • Publication number: 20080107525
Abstract: A shaft seal reduces leakage between a rotating shaft and a stator. The shaft seal includes a plurality of plate members attached to the stator in facing relation. The plate members define a sealing ring between the stator shell and the rotating shaft. A thickness of the plate members tapers from thick to thin from a stator end to a rotating shaft end. In this manner, with the more tightly packed tips of the plate members, axial leakage is reduced by tapering the plate members so that the plate roots are thicker than the plate tips.
