    Abstract: An apparatus for automatically establishing fluid communication between a probe and a plurality of containers presented in the sequence to a sampling position includes a container supported rack movable into and out of the sampling position. A probe holder supports the probe for movement into and out of the sampling position. A drive unit connects to the rack and probe holder for effecting and controlling the movements thereof. The drive unit includes a first pressure fluid operated motor actuable for moving the probe into and out of the sampling position for communication with a container thereat and a second pressure fluid operated motor actuable for causing the rack to move a desired one of the containers into the sampling position, the first and second pressure fluid operated motors being actuable independently of each other from a common source of pressure fluid. The apparatus is connectible to provide sequential samples for an analysis system, such as a high pressure liquid chromatography system.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing a small metal filter from a liquid chromatographic column, wherein a retaining member is clamped around the tube. A first centering device is releasably centered on the retaining member in alignment with the filter, whereupon a drill is slidably guided through the centering device for forming a hole of selected depth in the filter. The first centering device is removed and a second centering device is supported on the retainer, which second centering device has a threaded opening therethrough aligned with the filter. An extractor is threaded into the opening so that the end of the extractor is disposed directly adjacent the filter. A tapping unit having an elongated thread-forming tap is slidably inserted through an opening formed in the extractor, which opening is aligned with the hole formed in the filter. The tapping unit is threaded inwardly so that the tap threadably engages the filter and until a handle on the tapping unit abuts the extractor.

    Abstract: An apparatus and process for automatic high pressure liquid chromatography utilizing an automatic liquid sampler, a sample transport device, a high pressure sampling valve, a liquid chromatograph having a detector, a recorder and an integrator. Timing devices associated with the foregoing components automatically control and synchronize the chromatographic events, such as the volume and duration of the sampling and rinse functions, the mobile phase pump refill, and sample injection and the overall chromatographic cycle time. This apparatus has a last sample stop capability, and one embodiment can produce forty 20 minute chromatograms in approximately thirteen hours of unattended operation.
