  • Patent number: 7421174
Abstract: A silicate optical fiber comprises a graded index silicate core co-doped with aluminum oxide, phosphorus oxide, germanium oxide and fluorine in unique compositions that we have discovered allow multimode, multi-wavelength operation without significant intermodal dispersion. Illustratively, the core comprises a multiplicity of compositions whose refractive indices are graded from a maximum at or near the center of the core to a minimum at the interface with the cladding. Each core composition resides within a sub-volume of a 5 dimensional phase space in which an optimum core profile shape is essentially constant over the wavelength range of operation of the fiber. For operation in the wavelength range of about 0.78 ?m to 1.55 ?m, each composition preferably comprises no more than approximately 6 mole % Al2O3, 9 mole % P2O5, 6 mole % GeO2, 6 mole % F, and 90-100 mole % SiO2.

  • Publication number: 20070220451
Abstract: A network documentation system computer program (302) for documenting a network (100) receives a configuration of elements (205) within the network (100). Methodology (320) of the program represents the elements (205) by nodes (336) in a model of the network (100). Each of the nodes (336) is defined by one of a plurality of nodes types (402), and each of the node types (402) governs structure rules (504) for child nodes (808) and connectivity rules (508) for defining links (338) between nodes (336). The nodes (336) are presented in a network graph (312) in accordance with the structure rules (504) to document the network (100), with the child nodes (808) associated with their respective parent nodes (806). The links (338) are depicted between the nodes (336) in the network graph (312) in accordance with the connectivity rules (508), and represent connections between pairs of elements (205) in the network (100).

  • Publication number: 20070043589
Abstract: A pharmacy benefits plan is designed such that covered scripts are placed into Groups and allowances are provided for the purchase of scripts within each Group. Each Group comprises scripts for pharmaceuticals that provide medical benefits within a given time frame. A first Major Group is assigned to scripts for drugs that are prescribed for conditions that would otherwise result in further medical treatment and expense if said drugs were not taken by an insured. A second Major Group is assigned to scripts for drugs that are prescribed for conditions that would not normally result in subsequent medical costs if the drugs were not taken. Relatively high allowances are provided for scripts in said first Major Group such that the out-of-pocket costs of a given script will not be a barrier to said insured obtaining and taking said scripts.

  • Publication number: 20060287611
Abstract: A diagnostic agent is delivered intravaginally or to the interlabial space by positioning an interlabial device, such as an absorbent pad, between the labia. The pad is retained between the labia to deliver an active agent, or allow a reaction with a diagnostic agent. Alternatively, the pad is applied after the diagnostic agent is administered, to help reduce discomfort to the subject, or loss of the diagnostic agent. The active agent may be carried by the pad itself, or in an intravaginal extension of the pad, or separately in a suppository or other dosage form. In particular examples, the pad has a smaller minor portion superimposed on a larger major portion, and the smaller minor portion is inserted as a leading edge between the labia of the subject to facilitate interlabial insertion. In another example, the pad is placed interlabially after insertion of an agent.

  • Publication number: 20050277202
Abstract: A device for collecting oral liquids includes a lateral flow chromatography strip having a collection member. The collection member is separated from the remainder of the chromatography strip by a liquid impermeable removable barrier which prevents liquid in the collection member from entering the chromatography strip. Once adequate oral liquid has been collected (as indicated by a sample sufficiency indicator), the barrier is removed to allow oral liquids to flow through the strip. The liquids interact with binding partners in the strip to provide test results, such as an indication that an analyte of interest is present in the liquid. The strip may be contained in a housing with an access opening through which the removable barrier may be manipulated, and windows through which test results may be viewed. This device avoids reflux of reagents from the strip into the mouth of a test subject during use.

  • Publication number: 20050261939
Abstract: A Pharmacy Benefits Calculator reads in an insured's prior pharmacy claims history and then calculates said insured's anticipated out-of-pocket costs for one or more pharmacy benefits plans that said insured is eligible to enroll in. Provision is made for an insured to modify their anticipated future pharmacy needs. Provision is also made for an insured to compare their out-of-pocket costs for different alternative drugs, said alternative drugs providing comparable therapeutic benefits. Provision also is made for an insured to substitute a lower cost generic equivalent for a brand drug, when available. Another provision is made for an insured to choose to price drugs at a retail pharmacy store or a mail order pharmacy and determine cost differences. The pricing available from said retail pharmacy store may be based on a price negotiated by an insurance company offering said pharmacy benefits plans.

  • Publication number: 20050182376
Abstract: A method is disclosed for absorbing anal leakage, such as fecal material, blood or flatulence. The method includes positioning an intergluteal absorbent pad external to the anal orifice of a subject such that the pad is retained between the buttocks, and any discharge from the anus is absorbed by the absorbent material of the pad. The pad has a smaller minor portion superimposed on a larger major portion, and the smaller minor portion is inserted as a leading edge between the gluteals of the subject to facilitate insertion by gradually moving the gluteals apart. The smaller minor portion of the pad is positioned against the anal orifice to minimize pressure exerted in this sensitive area, while the larger major portion is retained in the less sensitive intergluteal space. The major portion conforms to the soft tissue of the gluteals, and is large enough to help retain the pad frictionally in place without any adhesive or garment to hold it in place.

  • Publication number: 20040221617
Abstract: Methods for modifying preform core ovality during and subsequent to the formation of an optical fiber preform. Prior to MCVD deposition on a starting tube, the outer diameter of the starting tube is altered by etching or a like process to modify its ovality. Additionally, after MCVD deposition forms the core rod, but prior to overcladding of the core rod, the code rod may be etched to change its ovality. Both methods may be used independently or in combination to modify the ovality and reduce PMD of optical fiber drawn from the core rod. An additional method includes etching the cladding material of a core rod having an oval or elliptical core such that the cladding material mirrors the shape of the oval core. During drawing, the perform created there from is placed under a surface tension, or pulled in a manner to generate a circular or near perfect circular optical fiber having desired ovality and low PMD.

  • Patent number: 6553790
Abstract: A silica-based core rod is traversed by a heat source along its longitudinal axis, to provide heated, softened regions. During the traverse, compressive or tensile movements are provided along the rod's longitudinal axis, these movements inducing, respectively, increases or decreases in the core diameter at the softened regions. By providing selective core diameter increases and/or decreases across the entire length of the core rod, a desired core diameter profile is attained. It is possible to attain a substantially uniform core diameter, or a varying core diameter profile that provides particular properties, such as systematically varying dispersion. In addition, due to the ability to increase core diameter and core rod diameter in a controlled manner, it is possible to make larger core rods, and in turn larger fiber preforms, than presently possible.
