  • Publication number: 20020107315
Abstract: The compositions of the present invention comprise at least one substantially random interpolymer (or blends with other thermoplastics), one or more flame retardant compounds and, optionally one or more flame-retardant synergists. For levels of flame retardants which yield a halogen content of about 0.05 to about 50 parts-per-hundred resin (phr), depending on whether the structure is foamed or not, which in turn result in LOI levels greater than or equal to about 23% oxygen, the compositions of the present invention unexpectedly still retain desirable mechanical properties such as compressive strength, toughness, and elasticity.

  • Patent number: 6071580
Abstract: Disclosed is an absorbent, extruded, open cell thermoplastic foam. The foam has an open cell content of about 50 percent or more and an average cell size of up to about 1.5 millimeters. The foam is capable of absorbing a liquid at about 50 percent or more of its theoretical volume capacity when absorbing a liquid. The foam preferably has an average equivalent pore size of about 5 micrometers or more. The foam preferably has a structure substantially of cell walls and cell struts. Further disclosed is a method for absorbing a liquid employing the foam by elongation of the extrudate of the extrusion die. Further disclosed is a method of enhancing absorbency of an open cell foam by applying a surfactant to an exposed surface of the foam such that it remains at the surface and does not infiltrate a substantial distance into the foam. Further disclosed is a meat tray and a diaper containing the foam.

  • Patent number: 5160784
Abstract: Disclosed is a coextruded, fire-resistant, composite structure of adjacent, alternating first and second layers wherein the first layer comprises a thermoplastic foam and second layer a thermoplastic material with such second layers containing a quantity of a brominated fire retardant sufficient to enhance the flame retardancy of the composite structure. Incorporation of the fire retardant into the thermoplastic material layers allows a fire-resistant foam structure to be made using water as a blowing agent for the first layers while avoiding serious corrosion problems encountered when incorporating both brominated fire retardants and water in the same foam structure. Further disclosed are processes for making the above described composite structure. Further disclosed is a composite flow melt expandable into the above-described composite structure.
