Patent number: 8812443Abstract: An apparatus for collecting dump data collection receives an on demand data (ODD) dump request, pauses one or more scan loops, transfers dump data to an ODD dump buffer space, unpauses the scan loops, and offloads dump data from the ODD dump buffer space to the storage device. The apparatus may also prioritize dump data for transfer to the ODD dump buffer space, load balance dump data for transfer to the ODD dump buffer space, and schedule offloading of the dump data from the ODD dump buffer space to non-volatile storage.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2007Date of Patent: August 19, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Douglas William Dewey, Brian David Hatfield, Ivan Ronald Olguin, II, William Griswold Sherman

Patent number: 8453157Abstract: Provided are a method, system and article of manufacture, wherein a first application executes at least two threads corresponding to a simultaneous multi-threaded processor whose resources have been acquired by the first application. The at least two threads are synchronized before releasing the simultaneous multi-threaded processor to a second application.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2004Date of Patent: May 28, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Michael Thomas Benhase, Yu-Cheng Hsu, John Norbert McCauley, Louis Alonso Rasor, William Griswold Sherman, Cheng-Chung Song

Patent number: 7774656Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and program for handling a fabric failure. A module intercepts a signal indicating a failure of a path in a fabric providing a connection to a shared device. The module generates an interrupt to a device driver in an operating system providing an interface to the shared device that is inaccessible due to the path failure. The device driver requests information from the module on a status of a plurality of devices that are not accessible due to the path failure and receives information indicating the inaccessible device. The device driver reconfigures to discontinue use of the inaccessible device.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2009Date of Patent: August 10, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yu-Cheng Hsu, John Norbert McCauley, William Griswold Sherman, Cheng-Chung Song

Patent number: 7676558Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and program for configuring shared devices over a fabric. A module in a first processing complex configures a first part of a fabric enabling communication with a set of devices accessible through the first part of the fabric. The module detects a located device accessible through a second part of the fabric, wherein a second processing complex is designated to configure the second part of the fabric and the located device. The module determines whether the second processing complex is available in response to detecting the uninitialized device. The module passes to a device driver in the first processing complex an uninitialized property for the located device. The device driver requests the module to configure the second part of the fabric to enable access to the located device over the second part of the fabric in response to determining that the located device has the uninitialized property.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2004Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Timothy Roy Block, Yu-Cheng Hsu, John Norbert McCauley, Sean Patrick Riley, William Griswold Sherman, Cheng-Chung Song

Patent number: 7676645Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture, wherein in certain embodiments, a plurality of logical memory blocks corresponding to a memory in a computational device are allocated. An attribute is associated with at least one logical memory block, wherein the attribute indicates whether the at least one logical memory block can be swapped from the memory, and wherein physical blocks corresponding to the at least one logical memory block are contiguous.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 2007Date of Patent: March 9, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yu-Cheng Hsu, John Norbert McCauley, Cheng-Chung Song, William Griswold Sherman

Patent number: 7584271Abstract: A determination is made as to whether a configuration indicator associated with a resource indicates a delayed configuration of the resource, wherein the resource is shared by a plurality of processing complexes via a bus, and wherein if the delayed configuration of the resource is indicated then the resource is prevented from being configured during initial program loads of the plurality of processing complexes. The resource is configured by only one of the of plurality of processing complexes that shares the resource, in response to determining that the configuration indicator associated with the resource indicates the delayed configuration of the resource.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2004Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Yu-Cheng Hsu, John Norbert McCauley, Cheng-Chung Song, William Griswold Sherman

Patent number: 6345295Abstract: A trace facility for a computer system attachment network, a method for operating that network, and trace tools in the network. The network has a plurality of the trace tools, each connected to a communication path, the trace facility providing a system wide trace. The trace facility comprises at least one trace buffer at each trace tool. Each trace tool has an address filter selecting an address range of information on the bus, the information being communicated on the bus as events, and storing the selected event information in the trace buffers, thereby conducting a trace. A breakpoint connection is provided interconnecting each of the trace tools. A trace tool control at each trace tool responds to a trace stop command addressed to the trace tool, to stop the trace at its address filter and trace buffer, and to issue a breakpoint signal on the breakpoint connection to all the interconnected trace tools.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1999Date of Patent: February 5, 2002Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Brent Cameron Beardsley, Carl Evan Jones, William Griswold Sherman, Joe Edward Smothers
