  • Patent number: 6505821
Abstract: A carburetor for an internal combustion engine including a body having an air inlet opening and air outlet opening. A throat is disposed in the body between the air inlet and outlet openings. A slide assembly is movably disposed in the body for crosswise movement across the throat. The slide assembly includes a stepped portion upstream of the throat and the lower portion of the air inlet opening is narrowed for concentrating and compressing the air entering the throat. A reservoir containing fuel is attached to the body. The fuel reservoir includes a fuel outlet located in the throat. An adjustable metering rod extends through the slide assembly and throat into the fuel reservoir. A recessed scoop is located in the body above the air inlet opening and is in air flow communication with the fuel reservoir.

  • Patent number: 5308554
Abstract: A carburetor of the slide and metering rod type is characterized by the provision of a tapered metering rod for streamlining the flow of air from the inlet end of the carburetor around the metering rod to reduce turbulence and increase air velocity by compressing the air flow. The metering rod has a wedge configuration with the forward pointed edge thereof facing in the direction of the inlet end and the side walls thereof tapering outwardly and rearwardly from the forward edge.

  • Patent number: 4980097
Abstract: A carburetor of the slide and metering rod type is characterized by the provision of a device for obstructing reverse or backflow air from the outlet end of the carburetor body from passing the metering rod in order to prevent the backflow air from contaminating or from drawing excess fuel into the air/fuel mixture. The obstruction device may comprise either a flanged tubular collar arranged within the outlet end or a tapered surface of an insert arranged adjacent the carburetor throttle slide member. Alternatively, the body may comprise a plurality of rearwardly and inwardly extending recesses near the outlet end thereof for preventing the flow of contaminated backflow air past the metering rod. Openings may be provided in the obstruction devices for reverting the backflow air into the flow of the air/fuel mixture rearwardly of the metering rod and toward the outlet end of the carburetor.

  • Patent number: 4971730
Abstract: A carburetor of the slide and metering rod type is characterized by the provision of an air deflecting bar in the carburetor throat adjacent the metering rod for deflecting the flow of air from the inlet end of the carburetor around the metering rod to reduce turbulence and increase air velocity by compressing the air flow. The deflecting bar has a wedge configuration with the pointed edge thereof facing in the direction of the inlet end. The bar may be permanently mounted within the throat or connected with the carburetor throttle slide member.

  • Patent number: 4926059
Abstract: The position of the metering rod relative to the slide member of a carburetor is adjusted by rotation of an adjusting screw which slidably extends through an opening in a plate member fixedly mounted within a substantially vertical bore in the slide member. The upper end of the adjusting screw has an enlarged head in engagement with the upper surface of the plate member and is engageable with a suitable tool to rotate the adjusting screw. The lower end of the adjusting screw is threadably received within a threaded bore in the head portion of the metering rod which is slidably and nonrotatably received within the bore in the slide member. A helical spring member surrounds the adjusting screw and is disposed between the lower surface of the plate member and the head portion of the metering rod to urge the metering rod downwardly. Accordingly, rotation of the adjusting screw causes the metering rod to move upwardly or downwardly so as to vertically adjust it relative to the slide member.

  • Patent number: 4442046
Abstract: A carburetor comprising a body defining a throat, a throttle slide member slidably mounted on the body and disposed in the throat, a rotary actuator for the slide member, and a tapered metering rod or needle mounted on the slide member and extending downwardly into a fuel supply tube leading into a sealed and pressurized fuel reservoir or bowl secured to the body. The slide member has front and rear, substantially flat panels disposed in substantially parallel relation, with the front panel being shorter than the rear panel for the purpose of providing air at the outlet of the fuel supply tube even when the slide is in a closed position and for directing air toward and around the outlet when the slide is in an open position. The bottom of the rear panel has a cut-out portion in alignment with the metering rod and fuel outlet at the throat for the purpose of directing high speed air flow toward the metering rod and around the fuel outlet.

  • Patent number: 4013741
Abstract: A carburetor of the slide and pin type having a throttle slide mounted in grooves on opposite sides of the throat and carrying a pin extending into a fuel discharge nozzle tube. The control edge of the slide has a concave recess which, together with the confronting surface of the carburetor throat defines the air passage surrounding the pin and concentrates the flow of air directly over and past the pin in such a way as to thoroughly atomize the fuel and distribute it uniformly in the airstream. Another feature of the invention is a choke arrangement comprising a longitudinal air passage bypassing the throttle slide and leading to a fuel choke valve and a cross passage into the downstream portion of the carburetor throat. The air flow through this passage will draw fuel up through the valve.

  • Patent number: 3985839
Abstract: A carburetor of the slide and pin type having a throttle slide carrying a pin extending into a fuel discharge nozzle tube. The pin is tapered and has a shoulder at the deeper end of the taper which acts as an acceleraor pump, providing a spurt of fuel under conditions of rapid acceleration. The pump structure also provides support for the outboard end of the pin. A novel pin taper construction is also shown which furnishes increased atomization.
