  • Patent number: 6242145
Abstract: A developer of a mixture of carrier particles and toner particles containing at least one binder, at least one colorant, and optionally one or more additives, has a triboelectric value of from 35 to 60 &mgr;C/g, a charge distribution (Q/D) of from −0.5 to −1.0 fC/&mgr;m and the distribution is substantially unimodal and possesses a peak width of less than 0.5 fC/&mgr;m, preferably less than 0.3 fC/&mgr;m, and a conductivity of the developer ranges from 1×10−11 to 10×10−15 mho/cm as measured at 30 V. The carrier particles of the developer preferably have an average particle diameter of 65 to 90 microns and a size distribution wherein 2.0% or less of a total number of carrier particles have a size less than 38 micrometers. The ratio of carrier volume median diameter to toner volume median diameter is about 10:1. The developer finds particular use in devices utilizing hybrid scavengeless development.

  • Patent number: 5601960
Abstract: A process comprising:(a) reactive melt mixing of a base resin with a chemical initiator and crosslinking of said base resin to enable a highly crosslinked precursor resin, said highly crosslinked precursor resin being substantially free of sol, and comprising uncrosslinked portions and crosslinked portions, said crosslinked portions comprised of high density crosslinked microgel particles; and(b) accomplishing dilution by melt mixing said highly crosslinked precursor resin of (a) with a base resin to form a partially crosslinked toner resin, said toner resin being substantially free of sol, and comprising linear uncrosslinked portions and crosslinked portions, said crosslinked portions comprised essentially of high density crosslinked microgel particles, wherein said microgel particles are present in an amount of from about 1 to about 45 percent by weight of said toner resin.

  • Patent number: 5480756
Abstract: A low melt, high gloss toner resin with low minimum fix temperature, wide fusing latitude and wide gloss latitude contains a linear portion and 1 to 10 percent by weight of a crosslinked portion containing high density, crosslinked microgel particles, but substantially free of low density, crosslinked polymer. The resin is particularly suitable for high gloss applications, such as process color and color transparencies, and for high speed fusing, shows excellent offset resistance, wide fusing latitude, wide gloss latitude and superior vinyl offset properties. The resin may be formed by reactive melt mixing.

  • Patent number: 4524120
Abstract: An improved process for rapidly charging toner particles which comprises (I) adding uncharged replenishment toner particles to a charged developer composition comprised of carrier particles and toner particles, the carrier particles consisting of a core containing a continuous polymer coating thereover having incorporated therein a fluoropolymer, contained on from about 1 percent to about 20 percent of the surface area of the coating, (II) contacting the charged developing composition containing said carrier particles with uncharged toner particles wherein charges are transferred to the uncharged toner particles within a mixing period of from about 5 seconds to about 5 minutes, thereby resulting in substantially the same level of charge intensity for said uncharged toner particles as the charge intensity for the charged toner particles in the charged developer composition, which charge intensity for example is from about 5 microcoulombs per gram to about 50 microcoulombs per gram of toner particles.
