Abstract: An improved security document which protects documents from copying on color copying machines. The document has cancellation terms and background pattern in two tones. If the copier is adjusted to obscure the cancellation term on reproduced copies at one tone, the cancellation at the other tone will appear. In an alternative embodiment, the density of the cancellation term and the background pattern vary across the face of the document. In this case, the cancellation term will appear somewhere on the copy no matter what copier adjustments are made.

Abstract: A security, information document for providing information to a reader from an information source organization includes a document substrate having a first area in which a half-tone warning image is printed, indicating that a copy of the document is an unauthorized document. A half-tone background image is printed in a second area on the substrate, with the second area surrounding the first area. A camouflage image extends over the document substrate for confusing the eye of an observer such that the warning image is not readily observed. One of the half-tone warning image and the half-tone background image is printed with a half-tone screen of such a line spacing that it is not readily reproducible by a copier. The camouflage image may contain an identification of the source of the information.

Abstract: An international financial instrument has a multi-letter international monetary code printed on the face thereof in a first area and an amount printed on the face thereof in a second area. The letters making up the monetary code are printed in a negative pattern and formed by a series of rows of printed dots which define the outlines for the letters. The name of the currency denomination corresponding to the multi-letter international monetary code may be printed in at least one line overlapping the multi-letter international monetary code. Each of the letters may be printed in a negative pattern that includes an open area in which a smaller version of the letter is printed in a positive pattern.

Abstract: A coated cellulosic web product and coating composition which provides enhanced toner adhesion for documents printed using noncontact printing devices such as laser printers is provided. The toner adhesion enhancing coated cellulosic product includes a cellulosic web having first and second major surfaces with at least one of the major surfaces having coated thereon a polymeric toner adhesion-enhancing composition comprising a generally transparent copolymer of styrene and acrylic acid having a glass transition temperature of between about -16 and 22 degrees C and from about 1 to about 5% by weight zinc as a cross-linking agent for said copolymer. The web may be either continuous or in sheet form. The toner adhesion-enhancing composition may also optionally include a coloring agent and a plasticizing agent.

Abstract: A confidential information bearing article comprising a cover sheet adhered to a base sheet is provided which is capable of providing hidden confidential information to a recipient. Through the use of camouflage, obscuring, and opacifying and reflectivity increasing coatings, the paper used for the mailer becomes effectively opaque, and information printed on the inside of the article is substantially unreadable from the outside. The article includes an adhesive for securing the base sheet and cover sheet and perforations along the edges to assist the recipient in opening the article.

Abstract: A numbering system is disclosed for use on financial instruments which due to the unique shape and size of each number the financial instrument is secure from having the sums raised through the commonly used cut and paste technique.

Abstract: A financial instrument has an amount printed on its face in which the digits making up the amount are printed in a negative pattern. The digits are formed by a series of rows of printed dots which define the outlines of the digits. To make alteration of the amount more difficult, each of the digits includes a boundary portion formed by a single row of dots which makes up a portion of the outline of each of the adjoining digits.

Abstract: A document protected against alteration comprises a sheet of paper having, on its face, an area in which numerals representing a sum of money to be paid on the document are printed. The area has a left end and a right end, and the entire length of the area, from the left end to the right end, is filled with printing so that unauthorized insertions cannot be made in the area.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for protecting a document against unauthorized alteration comprising providing, on localized areas of a substrate, a self-contained chemical system which can produce an authorized visible message when subjected to impact pressure, and the same chemical system produces an unauthorized warning indication when any attempt is made to mechanically alter the authorized visible message.

Abstract: A protected document has a cancellation phrase, normally invisible to the human eye, which will appear if the document is copied on a color copier. The protection of these documents is improved in the following protected document. The document is made up of a substrate, first and second cancellation phrase images which form a combined cancellation phrase image printed on the substrate, first and second background images forming a combined background image printed on the substrate and a camouflage overlay image (merged with) the combined cancellation and combined background images. The first and second cancellation phrase images appear on the document when it is copied on a color copier. The two images extend the range of protection for color copy machines having multiple darkness settings.

Abstract: A color-copier resistant document is disclosed which includes a repeated invalidating phrase printed on a document, together with a background tone. In addition to having an overlay camouflage tone printed over the entire surface of the document, each of the invalidating images is formed of irregular, smooth-shaped letters which further advance their hiding characteristics. Overall sizes are suggested for the use of the invalidating word VOID, and stroke sizes for each of the letters are also disclosed.

Abstract: The apparatus is an improved web processor, which operates at a high web speed, and can achieve variable document lengths with only programmable changes. To achieve this result the web processor uses an improved tool and web drive control. The tool control insures that the tool contacts the web once per document length. The web drive control varies the web speed to mate with the tool during impact and then speed up or slows down the web to maintain a constant speed throughout the processing unit.

Abstract: A demountable document receiving tray or gauge member is provided with means for adjusting the lateral location of a document relative to the printing position of a MICR imprinting apparatus so as to position the document at any one of a multiple set of full field MICR printing positions. Structure operably associated with the document receiving tray permits automatic actuation of the MICR printing mechanism by insertion of a document. Also included is structure providing a time delay preventing accidental actuation of the document printing structure after withdrawal of the document.
