  • Patent number: 4337708
Abstract: A welded structural frame for a railway car wall is disclosed as including a pair of aligned U-section vertical members welded to opposite sides of a U-section longitudinal member and a reinforcing insert welded between the sides of the longitudinal member in alignment with the vertical members to provide a frame substantially free of welding distortion. A method of making such a frame is also disclosed as including securing longitudinal and vertical members in a fixture, welding the vertical members to opposite sides of the longitudinal member and then welding a reinforcing insert between the sides of the longitudinal member in alignment with the vertical members.

  • Patent number: 4244299
Abstract: A locking arrangement for the side dump doors of a hopper car includes a pair of actuating levers projecting downward from the car engaging suitable trips mounted adjacent to the tracks which provides for longitudinal movement of a pair of latch bars which disengage a plurality of latches longitudinally disposed on the car between the hopper slope sheets and the swinging doors. Safety locks are provided to provide inadvertent opening of the latch mechanisms.

  • Patent number: 4235169
Abstract: An open top hopper car particularly adapted to transport logs and pulpwood products includes a car body having a central partition separating the car into a pair of hoppers which are open at their lower ends for discharging materials sideways and downwardly through the supporting track into a pit area. The car is provided with a door locking mechanism including a longitudinally extending actuating member which by means of flexible linkages rotates bellcranks supported on a hopper out of locking engagement with keeper members provided at the lower ends of a pair of swinging doors.

  • Patent number: 4222334
Abstract: An operating mechanism for sequentially opening and closing hopper discharge door is provided. Longitudinally extending gates are arranged in pairs and are suspended from the hopper by hinge links at one end and by an operator arm located near the center of each gate. A hopper-mounted rotating link is attached to one operator arm and a hopper-mounted bell crank is attached to the other operator arm; both the rotating link and the bell crank are interconnected to sequentially operate the doors. A power cylinder and linkage are connected with the bell crank for automatically opening and closing the doors.

  • Patent number: 4078669
Abstract: A striker assembly for end-of-car hydraulic cushioning devices includes a housing which is connected to the shank of the coupler. The coupler shank is provided with an elongated slot which is connected to a transversely extending key carried in key supporting slots provided in vertical side walls of the housing. The key has a pair of transversely spaced notches which are engaged by vertical retaining pins supported within the housing. One of the retaining pins is movable outwardly from the housing which thereupon permits the key to be removed through one of the key supporting slots whereby the coupler is readily removable.

  • Patent number: 3966150
Abstract: A railroad car maximum speed limiting device including a railroad car wheel-driven generator and centrifugal speed responsive switch for operating a solenoid valve to supply vacuum to the vehicle brakes from an auxiliary vacuum reservoir after the vehicle has passed a magnetic trip operating a relay to complete the genertor circuit, the improvement comprising an air cylinder operated by trainline vacuum for moving the generator and centrifugal speed responsive switch wheel out of engagement with the car wheel for trainline operation, and a special shuttle valve on the cylinder for supplying braking vacuum to the cylinder alternately from the speed control auxiliary vacuum reservoir or from the main conventional vacuum reservoir.
