    Abstract: Provided is a glass fiber prepared by combining two glasses, preferably at least one of which is biosoluble, in a core/sheath arrangement. Such an arrangement can provide fibers potentially stronger than those of single glasses, while also having a permanent twist or curl to impart improved loft and recovery to blankets or mats comprised of them. Preferably, the core is offset from the center of the fiber. In one embodiment, the glass fibers of the present invention comprise a core and a sheath, where the core glass of the structure contracts as it cools to a greater extent than the sheath glass of the structure. Benefits are achieved in this manner, preferably with regard to biosoluble fibers.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a glass fiber binding composition having an effective binding amount of a furan resin, an effective emulsifying amount of an emulsifier agent, and sufficient amount of water to result in a binding composition having from 0.5 to 80% N.V. The invention further pertains to a process of binding glass fibers at junctions of the fibers comprising the steps of providing glass fibers, applying an effect binding amount of an emulsified glass fiber binding composition to the junctions of the glass fibers, and curing the binder at the junctions of the glass fibers. Finally, the invention also discloses a glass fiber composition comprising a plurality of glass fibers having a plurality of junctions where two or more fibers meet, and an effective binding amount of an emulsified glass fiber binding composition applied to a portion of the junctions of the glass fibers.

    Abstract: Glass fibers of curly habit may be prepared from a heterogeneous melt of blended particles of at least two distinct glasses. Linear glass primaries controllable in pot and marble processing may be prepared from the heterogeneous melts. Fibers prepared from the randomly heterogeneous primaries exhibit a unique biodissolution mechanism and high biodissolution rates. The process is also amenable to other glass fiberization processes, including the rotary process and the sliver process.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a glass fiber binding composition having an effective binding amount of an aqueous compatible furan resin mixed with sufficient water to result in a binding composition having from 0.5 to 80% nonvolatile. The aqueous compatible furan resin is the reaction product of a source of ammonia and a first reaction product, the first reaction product being derived from the reaction of an acidic furan resin, a source of reactable formaldehyde, and a formaldehyde scavenger. The invention further pertains to a process of binding glass fibers at junctions of the fibers comprising the steps of providing glass fibers, applying an effect binding amount of the binding composition of the invention to the glass fibers such that the binder is present at a portion of the junctions, and curing the resin at the junctions of the glass fibers.

    Abstract: Inorganic fibers which have a silicon extraction of greater than about 0.02 wt % Si/day in physiological saline solutions. The fiber contains SiO.sub.2, MgO, CaO, and at least one of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, ZrO.sub.2, TiO.sub.2, B.sub.2 O.sub.3, iron oxides, or mixtures thereof. Also disclosed are inorganic fibers which have diameters of less than 3.5 microns and which pass the ASTM E-119 two hour fire test when processed into a fiber blanket having a bulk density in the range of about 1.5 to 3 pcf.

    Abstract: In a method of and an apparatus for forming composite and other fibers, individual filaments from two or more sets of continuous primary filaments of two or more heat-softenable fiberizable materials are brought together lengthwise to form pairs of continuous primary filaments. The groupings of continuous primary filaments are fed into a high energy attenuation blast where the filaments are heated, attenuated and formed into composite or other staple fibers of the heat-softenable fiberizable materials. Preferably, the individual continuous primary filaments of the groupings of continuous primary filaments are fused, adhesively bonded or otherwise joined together, prior to being introduced into the high energy attenuation blast, to prevent the individual primary filaments of the groupings of continuous primary filaments from separating in the high energy attenuation blast.
