Patent number: 11162514Abstract: A fluid power system comprises a pump with multiple independently variable outlets, each of which is capable of delivering fluid in individually controllable volume units and a plurality of hydraulic loads. A system of switching valves is configured to create fluid connections between the pump outlets and the loads. A control system commands both the pump and the switching valves, so as to create valve state combinations to satisfy load conditions as demanded by an operator. The number of pump outlets connected to one or more of the loads is changeable to satisfy the flow required of the load due to the operator demand, each pump outlet being commanded to produce a flow depending on the status of other outlets connected a load to which the outlet is connected and the operator demand for that load.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 2018Date of Patent: November 2, 2021Assignees: Artemis Intelligent Power Ltd., Danfoss Power Solutions ApSInventors: William Hugh Salvin Rampen, Niall James Caldwell, Uwe Bernhard Pascall Stein, Pierre Joly, Michael Richard Fielding

Patent number: 11137330Abstract: An object is displaced alternately in opposite directions, using a hydraulic power unit having a rotatable body which includes the shaft of a hydraulic machine having electronically commutated valves. A motor drives the rotatable body. The hydraulic machine drives an actuator to displace the object in use. Energy is transformed from rotational kinetic energy of the rotatable body to elastic strain energy or elastic strain and gravitational potential energy of the object during a pumping phase and rotation of the rotatable body slows, but does not change direction. The potential energy then drives the hydraulic machine to motor and the rotatable shaft speeds up again, storing rotational kinetic energy. The displacement of the hydraulic machine is controlled throughout to match a time varying demand taking into account the varying speed of rotation of the rotatable shaft. The motor provides energy to compensate for losses and the process can repeat cyclically.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2019Date of Patent: October 5, 2021Assignee: ARTEMIS INTELLIGENT POWER LIMITEDInventors: William Hugh Salvin Rampen, Niall Caldwell, Peter Mccurry

Publication number: 20200386101Abstract: A hydraulic system employing an electronically commutated fluid working machine having working chambers, each having one or more electronically controllable valves actively controlled by a controller to regulate the net displacement of working fluid into or out of low- and high-pressure manifolds on a cycle by cycle basis to meet an indicated demand. The high-pressure manifold has an additional outlet, regulated by a controllable outlet valve. If the demand indicated by a demand signal is expected to cause pulsatile flow or vibrations which may excite resonant modes, the controller causes the displacement of working fluid by the working chambers to exceed the demand indicated by the demand signal, and the controller simultaneously opens an electronically controllable outlet valve to allow some of the excess flow to leave, such that the net displacement of fluid meets the demanded displacement of fluid, while mitigating the pulsatile flow or undesirable vibrations.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 4, 2020Publication date: December 10, 2020Applicants: ARTEMIS INTELLIGENT POWER LIMITED, DANFOSS SCOTLAND LIMITEDInventors: Paul MARSHALL, Jeremie LAGARDE, Uwe STEIN, William Hugh Salvin RAMPEN

Patent number: 9488163Abstract: The present invention provides a fluid system (99) comprising a source of hydraulic fluid under pressure supplying a hydraulic fluid consumer (103) together with a valve passing fluid between said source and said fluid consumer (102). A first fluid compliance (105) is situated between said source (100) and said valve (102) and a variable restrictor (110) is provided for varying the cross sectional area available for flow of fluid through said valve (102) and is movable between a first position (A) with a larger said area and a second position (B) with a smaller said area. A bias means (117) biases said restrictor (110) towards said second position while an opening means (Fa) urges said restrictor (110) against said bias (117) when fluid flows through said valve (102) and a damping means (126) damps movement of said restrictor between said first and second positions and provides a resistance which increases with the velocity of displacement of said restrictor (110).Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 2010Date of Patent: November 8, 2016Assignees: Artemis Intelligent Power Limited, Sauer-Danfoss APSInventors: Niall James Caldwell, William Hugh Salvin Rampen

Patent number: 9133838Abstract: In a method of operating a fluid-working machine, the volume of working fluid displaced during each cycle of working chamber volume is selected taking into account the availability of other working chambers. The status of each working chamber is monitored and a working chamber treated as unavailable if it is found to be malfunctioning. A working chamber may be treated as unavailable if it is allocated to an alternative working function. A fault may be detected in a working chamber by determining whether a measured output parameter of the fluid working machine fulfills at least one acceptable function criterion taking into account the previously selected net displacement of working fluid by a working chamber during a cycle of working chamber volume to carry out the working function.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2011Date of Patent: September 15, 2015Assignee: ARTEMIS INTELLIGENT POWER LIMITEDInventors: William Hugh Salvin Rampen, Niall James Caldwell, Stephen Michael Laird

Patent number: 9133839Abstract: In a method of detecting a fault in a fluid-working machine including a plurality of working chambers of cyclically varying volume, each working chamber is operable to displace a volume of working fluid which is selectable for each cycle of working chamber volume to carry out a working function responsive to a received demand signal. An output parameter of the fluid working machine, which is responsive to the displacement of working fluid by one or more of the working chambers to carry out the working function, is measured. It is determined whether the measured output parameter fulfils at least one acceptable function criterion, taking into account the previously selected net displacement of working fluid by a working chamber during a cycle of working chamber volume to carry out the working function.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2011Date of Patent: September 15, 2015Assignee: ARTEMIS INTELLIGENT POWER LIMITEDInventors: William Hugh Salvin Rampen, Niall James Caldwell, Michael Richard Fielding, Stephen Michael Laird, Uwe Bernhard Pascal Stein, John Tearlach Campbell
