    Abstract: Techniques are presented for physically incapacitating data storage functionality of a computer data storage device for preventing access of data stored on the device. A security breach can be detected of a device housing a component communicable with a computer and where digital data is storable on the component. A mechanism can be activated for physically disabling the component in the device, in response to the detecting of the security breach. The incapacitating of the component can be a result of the mechanism physically contacting the component, in response to the activation of the mechanism, and the incapacitating of the component renders digital data stored on the component unretrievable by a computer.

The method further includes determining a budget of pings for data transfer by the shipment tracking device, where a ping includes various data collected by a plurality of sensors on the shipment tracking device. The method further includes determining, based on the battery life for the power source and the budget of pings for the data transfer, a transit ping rate for an initial portion of a transit route. The method further includes responsive to receiving a first ping from the shipment tracking device with a first set of the various data, updating the transit ping rate based on the first ping with the first set of data.

    Abstract: Impact indicators which include an impact registering structure are provided for a package. The impact registering structure registers a location and an elapsed time of an impact of excessive force on the package. The structure includes a first region, a second region, and a barrier film. The first region contains a first element, and the second region contains a second element. The first and second elements are selected to register the location and the elapsed time of the impact when coming in contact. The barrier film separates the first and second regions, and is calibrated to rupture with a specified impact force. Once ruptured, the first element and the second element contact, in part, to provide a location indication of the rupture in the barrier film and a time elapsed indication indicative of the elapsed time from the rupture in the barrier film.
