  • Patent number: 4776194
Abstract: A pipe mill and method comprises certain improvements in pipe mills of cage-type. Edge forming roll sets, usually mounted immediately downstream of the breakdown passes, are mounted for lateral movement to compensate for strip camber or lateral creep. In one form of the invention the edge forming rolls are adjustably fixed with respect to each other on a mounting plate which is suspended on a pivot. Movement of the edge forming rolls from side-to-side about the pivot is obtained by power steering each edge forming roll housing with the steering pivot located at the center of pressure of the edge forming roll set. The steering is controlled by a closed loop system utilizing sensors with a microprocessor. A taper pin lock holds the plate centered and against movement for threading purposes. Side push cylinder assemblies may be employed to center the plate for locking.

  • Patent number: 4286451
Abstract: A forming leveller establishes one or more datum or reference planes in variable thickness stock to facilitate subsequent roll forming. The reference planes may be established on the same side or opposite sides of the stock with a lateral gap to facilitate transition forming. The leveller includes top and bottom closely spaced roll sets forming multiple passes mounted on bottom and top frames, respectively, with floating rolls being opposed to fixed rolls. Back-up rolls are provided for the floating rolls and pressure devices urge the floating rolls against the stock in turn against the fixed rolls to form the desired reference planes thus enabling complex shapes to be roll formed from the variable thickness stock.

  • Patent number: 4021415
Abstract: Novel aromatic nitrile-containing polyester, polyamide, and silicone polymers are described. These nitrile-containing polymers are heat resistant and are used as fibers and resins and to prepare fiber-reinforced composites exhibiting outstanding mechanical strength at room and particularly elevated temperatures. Styrene-butadiene and styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers are described wherein at least some of the phenyl groups contain nitrile substituents. Composites having various shapes such as tires are described utilizing these nitrile-containing copolymers reinforced with fibers either containing aromatic nitrile groups or coated with resins containing nitrile substituted aromatic groups. These composites are useful in a variety of applications. The procedure for preparing such composites is disclosed.
