Patent number: 7001776Abstract: This invention provides a novel device and method for preparing cytology slides. The device comprises a book-like form including an absorbent material and filter attached to the inside surface of a front cover and a cytology slide removeably attached to an inside surface of a back cover. A sample is removed from the body of a patient, placed in a liquid-based solution, and then on the filter. When the book-like form is closed, the sample is effectively transferred to the slide. The device can be modified so that a plurality of slides are prepared at the same time.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2001Date of Patent: February 21, 2006Assignee: Digene CorporationInventors: Gerson Botacini das Dores, Iwona Mielzynska-Lohnas, Eliane Taromaru, William J. Patent number: 4625268Abstract: A quad fold pleated material is disclosed which has excellent obscuring function and an esthetically pleasing appearance that hides the shadows of supporting structure of a lamp shade or whatever else the material is draped around.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1985Date of Patent: November 25, 1986Assignee: Crown Creative IndustriesInventor: William J. Payne
-
Patent number: 4605996Abstract: A knock down lamp shade using a pleated material is disclosed which has excellent appearance and storability, and is easily assembled and dis-assembled. A flexible draw ring connected to the pleated material that provides and assists the assembly and dis-assembly function yet forms the top of an assembled lamp shade. A novel rigid supporting structure is disclosed that is easily stored, assembled and dis-assembled, and when combined with my pleated material, creates an esthetically pleasing and economical known down lamp shade that has excellent capacity to hide or obscure the shadows from the supporting structure from observation when installed on a lit lamp.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1985Date of Patent: August 12, 1986Assignee: Crown Creative IndustriesInventor: William J. Patent number: 4181060Abstract: A helical anchor of the type in which a helical coil surrounds a connecting bolt in attachment with a nut element. Rotation of the connecting bolt causes the coil to expand radially outwardly into gripping engagement with a side wall into which the anchor is received. The end turn of the coil is welded to the nut element. A generally annular notch is provided at approximately the heat affected zone of the weld. The weld is fracturable. Upon take-up of the anchor a break in the weld occurs after which time the notch advantageously provides for outward expansion of the end turn of the coil.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1977Date of Patent: January 1, 1980Inventor: William J. Payne

Patent number: 4170163Abstract: An indicator for sensing the degree of tension in a tensile member. An indicator element defined by a deformable elastomeric member is positioned within a translucent containment wall. Upon application of a tensile force to the tensile member the indicator element is caused to be compressed and expanded radially outwardly into contact with the containment wall. The degree of contact of the indicator element and the containment wall varies as a function of the amount of tension applied to the tensile member. As a consequence the appearance of the indicator element as viewed through the translucent containment wall will vary as a function of the tension applied to the tensile member. The invention also has application in compression systems. One particular application disclosed is an indicator for sensing the appropriate degree of compression as applied to glass curtain walls used in dry pressure glazing systems.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1977Date of Patent: October 9, 1979Assignee: Modulus CorporationInventor: William J. Payne

Patent number: 4162573Abstract: An assembly apparatus and method for use in the manufacture of strain indicators of the type in which a window and an indicator area are provided in a fluid filled capsule. Movement of the indicator area with respect to the window gives a visual indication of the load condition of the indicator. The assembly apparatus comprises means to provide for the initial placement of the fluid filled capsule into the tensile member of the strain indicator. Thereafter a compressive force is exerted on the capsule in order to bring the indicator area of the capsule in close proximity to the window with the tensile element in a relaxed condition. Following initial assembly the apparatus of this invention exerts a tensile pull on the tensile member of the strain indicator which causes the indicator area of the capsule to be separated from the window. Gap measuring means are employed to measure the distance between the window and the indicator area with the tensile element in a state of tension.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1978Date of Patent: July 31, 1979Assignee: Modulus CorporationInventor: William J. Payne

Patent number: 4041776Abstract: An optical indicator of the type wherein the lessening of the load on a member under strain produces movement of an indicator element. Such movement takes place when the relaxation of the member under strain has reached a certain predetermined value thereby giving an immediate visual indication of that fact.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1976Date of Patent: August 16, 1977Assignee: Modulus CorporationInventor: William J. Payne

Patent number: 4016762Abstract: A temperature indicator of the type wherein the heating of the indicator to a predetermined temperature produces a change in color of a visual indicator. An indicator area and a light-absorbing indicator fluid are sealed in a fluid holding member that also includes a window. The fluid holding member is fastened to the temperature indicator. At such time as the temperature indicator reaches a predetermined temperature, a portion of the sealing wall of the fluid holding member is caused to be interrupted with the result that fluid is caused to flow out of the fluid holding member thereby producing a visual indication through the window of the indicator that a high temperature limit has been reached.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1975Date of Patent: April 12, 1977Assignee: Modulus CorporationInventor: William J. Patent number: 4002139Abstract: A strain indicator of the type wherein a change in length of a strain member produces a change in color of a visual indicator. An indicator area and a light-absorbing indicator fluid are encapsulated in a member that also includes a window. The capsule is fastened to the strain member with an adhesive. A change in length of the strain member causes the indicator area to become separated from the window with the result that light-absorbing indicator fluid is caused to flow between the indicator area and the window.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1976Date of Patent: January 11, 1977Inventor: William J.
