  • Patent number: 8438956
Abstract: In one embodiment, a torque-indicating driver includes a handle configured to receive applied torque. One or more flat springs are coupled via a housing to the handle at their proximate ends. The one or more flat springs are configured to angularly deflect elastically in response to the applied torque. A hub is coupled to a distal end of the one or more flat springs, the hub having a torsion rod extending therefrom. The torsion rod is configured to apply torque to a load. An outer sleeve at least partially covers the housing. One or more plungers are affixed to the housing and configured to engage one or more holes or depressions disposed at predetermined locations in the outer sleeve. Engagement with the holes or depressions creates auditory and tactile feedback perceivable by a user of the torque-indicating driver to indicate when a particular torque level is reached.

  • Patent number: 8267957
Abstract: In one embodiment, a surgical instrument includes a first and second lever arms coupled by a first pivot. A ratchet bar is coupled to the first lever arm by a second pivot. The ratchet bar has a toothed portion extending from an interior face of the first lever arm and a paddle portion extending from an exterior face of the first lever arm. A catch is disposed at a proximate end of the second lever arm and arranged to engage teeth of the toothed portion of the ratchet bar. Engagement with the teeth couples the proximate ends of the first and second lever arms. The ratchet bar is further arranged to rotate about the second pivot in response to downward pressure upon the paddle. Depression of the paddle causes the teeth of disengage the catch, decoupling the first and second lever arms.

  • Patent number: 8262667
Abstract: In one embodiment, a surgical instrument is provided for grasping spherical implants. The surgical instrument includes a first lever arm having distal and proximate ends, as well as a second lever arm having distal and proximate ends. A first concave grasping cup is disposed at the distal end of the first lever arm. A second concave grasping cup is disposed at the distal end of the second lever arm. The first grasping cup and the second grasping cup are of differing sizes to enable the instrument to securely grasp spherical implants of a plurality of differing sizes.

  • Patent number: 8083596
Abstract: In one embodiment, a torque limiter comprises an outer cylindrical housing having a plurality of semicircular grooves disposed in an interior surface. An inner cylindrical housing is arranged at least partially within the outer cylindrical housing. The inner cylindrical housing has a plurality of slots passing from its interior surface to its exterior surface. A plurality of roller bearings are disposed within the slots. An elastic cylinder is also arranged within the interior of the inner cylindrical housing. When applied torque is below a torque limit, the elastic component presses the roller bearings into contact with the semicircular grooves to couple the outer and inner cylindrical housing. In response to applied torque exceeding the torque limit, the elastic component compresses sufficiently to allow the roller bearings to retract and disengage the semicircular grooves, thereby decoupling the outer and the inner cylindrical housings and preventing the transfer of torque.
