  • Publication number: 20190010333
Abstract: Kaolin compositions comprising coarse kaolin particles are disclosed herein. The kaolin compositions can include kaolin particles having a GE brightness of at least 78 and a particle size distribution wherein at least 50% by weight of the kaolin particles have an equivalent size diameter (e.s.d.) of 30 ?m or greater. In some embodiments, the kaolin compositions can include kaolin particles having a bimodal particle distribution. In other embodiments, the kaolin compositions can include kaolin particles having a low crystalline silica content, such as a crystalline silica content of 0.1% by weight or less and a particle size distribution wherein at least 50% by weight of the kaolin particles have an equivalent size diameter (e.s.d.) of 15 ?m or greater. In some embodiments, the kaolin particles can be free of crystalline silica. Methods of making and using the kaolin compositions are also disclosed herein.

  • Patent number: 6890983
Abstract: An aqueous composite particle composition containing composite particles and polyvalent metal ion is provided. The composite particles contain pigment particle with adsorbed polymer particles. The polymer particles contain pendant acid functional groups and has a molecular weight in a select range. Also provided are methods of preparing the aqueous composite particle composition. The aqueous composite particle composition is useful for preparing coating with high gloss and improved solvent resistance.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: May 10, 2005
    Assignee: Rohm and Haas Company
Inventors: William Joseph Rosano, Gary Robert Larson, Leo Joseph Procopio, Albert Mulligan Dager, Gary David Greenblatt
  • Patent number: 6756459
Abstract: A binder composition for aqueous coatings that exhibit high gloss and superior corrosion resistance when applied to metal substrates comprising an aqueous emulsion copolymer, the copolymer including as polymerized units, at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and an ethylenically unsaturated strong acid monomer, such as phosphorus containing monomers, particularly phosphoethylmethacrylate; or salts thereof. Also provided is a method for achieving high gloss and superior corrosion resistance of metal substrates by coating a substrate with an aqueous coating composition comprising the binders of the present invention and drying, or allowing to dry, the aqueous composition.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 12, 2001
Date of Patent: June 29, 2004
    Assignee: Rohm and Haas Company

  • Patent number: 6710161
Abstract: A polymer composition is provided including copolymer particles bearing phosphorus acid groups dispersed in an aqueous medium, wherein the polymer composition is substantially-free of water soluble phosphorus acid compounds. Also provided is a monomer composition containing at least one phosphorus acid monomer and a method of preparing the polymer composition from the monomer composition. The monomer composition is substantially-free of inorganic phosphorus acid compounds. A method is provided for applying the polymer composition to a substrate. The polymer composition is useful as a coating composition to prepare coatings for metal substrates, which have improved solvent resistance.
    Type: Grant
