  • Patent number: 8321936
Abstract: A system and a method for detecting malicious content associated with an electronic message are described. An electronic message, such as an e-mail, a chat request, a torrent file or a text message is initially received. The electronic message can then be compared to known viruses using pattern or signature matching techniques. The electronic message is then transmitted to a virtual machine which executes the electronic message in an environment simulating the destination computing system of the electronic message. The virtual machine monitors execution of the electronic message to identify one or more malicious actions and classifies the electronic message accordingly. For example, message component execution is monitored for attempts to access system files, attempts to access user information, attempts to transmit system configuration data or attempts to transmit user information.

  • Patent number: 6532497
Abstract: An intelligent network interface monitors activity states of a client and reports them to a network manager using a single network connection. The network interface monitors interrupts occurring on the client, derives activity states from the interrupts, and logs the activity states on the network interface. An activity state specifies whether the client is in a hung state, but may also specify whether the client is off, sleeping, inactive, or active. The network interface may periodically report the activity states to the network manager or report upon receiving a command. The network interface is preferably powered full time using a trickle power supply and therefore operates even when the remainder of the client is off. By including a processor or specialized logic on the network interface, the interface operates independently of the client operating system and therefore monitors and reports even when the client malfunctions.

  • Patent number: 6256732
Abstract: Described is a computer system which can automatically provide its capabilities to a main computer without powering on to facilitate configuring the system in its shipping package. The computer system is coupled to a remote computer via a data communication link. The system includes a communication subsystem which is supplied with auxiliary power and is operative to detect when a valid communication link is established between the computer system and the main computer. After the detection the communication subsystem sends a first packet to the main computer via the communication subsystem. The first packet includes data which specifically identifies the computer system. When the communication link is coupled to the communication subsystem through the packaging and a power source is coupled to a power connector of the system through the packaging, the system is operative to send the first packet without powering on.

  • Patent number: 6249812
Abstract: A client on a network is provided with auxiliary low power logic, at the network adaptor, that is always active and simulates network traffic (e.g., Ethernet format) normally sent under control of the main client system processor(s). This logic collects client status information and reports to the network manager, irrespective of the system's CPU power level, information and provides for interaction between the user and the administration or network manager to exercise broader control and perform repair and upgrades which would otherwise require a dialog with the user and/or limit repair and reconfiguration of the client system to off-hours activity. The auxiliary logic also can receive and interpret commands from the network that conform to a predefined format.

  • Patent number: 5949027
Abstract: A one-piece cable management ring is described that includes a snap attachment device for attaching and locking it to an electronic component enclosure. The ring is composed of a somewhat flexible material permitting it to function as cable strain relief. It has an opening in one side to permit easy access to the interior of the ring and also easy non-destructive removal from the ring.
