Publication number: 20240110458Abstract: A high expandable straddle and a method of providing annular isolation at a location in a well bore. The straddle includes two expandable pipe sections with a base pipe section therebetween and end pipe sections for connection in a tubular string. The straddle may be run in tubing with restricted inner diameters and by the introduction of pressure to the saddle over 30% expansion can occur to the expandable pipe sections to seal and grip the tubing spanning a fault. An embodiment is described with the straddle being of unitary construction, the expansion pipe sections having thinned walls and being entirely formed of an austenitic stainless steel. An anchoring arrangement and/or seals may also be located on the expandable pipe sections.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 8, 2023Publication date: April 4, 2024Applicant: Vertice Oil Tools, Inc.Inventors: Chris Cockrill, Phil Turrell, William Luke MCELLIGOTT, Cameron Radtke

Patent number: 11585185Abstract: An assembly and method of manufacturing an assembly for use as an isolation barrier to be run in and secured within a well. The assembly has a sleeve member positioned on the exterior of a tubular body, fixed at each end to create a chamber therebetween. Fluid can enter the chamber through a port in the tubular body to morph the sleeve member against a larger diameter surface in the well. The sleeve member is formed of at least two materials, welded together and machined before being arranged on the tubular body. One material is more expandable than the other so as to morph more easily. The sleeve is connected to the tubular body by screw threads and seals. Initial construction of the sleeve member allows welding, inspection and machining without affecting the tensile strength of the tubular body or complete assembly.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2019Date of Patent: February 21, 2023Assignee: VERTICE OIL TOOLS INC.Inventors: Cameron Hill Radtke, William Luke McElligott, Philip Henry Turrell, Christopher Brian Kevin Cockrill

Patent number: 10428617Abstract: A morphable packer and method of setting the packer to anchor one tubular within another tubular or borehole, and create a seal across an annulus in a well bore. The packer is formed as a single tubular member having a central section between end sections. Undulations are formed on the tubular member to create recesses in which annular slips having oppositely arranged inclined surfaces and an outer gripping surface are located to provide an anchoring arrangement. When morphed the slips move uniformly radially outwards and anchor to an outer tubular. Embodiments include pairs of reversed slips located in the recess, pairs of anchoring arrangements located along the tubular member and a gasket seal arranged around the tubular member.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2017Date of Patent: October 1, 2019Assignee: MORPHPACKERS LIMITEDInventors: Cameron Hill Radtke, William Luke McElligott, Davidson Harman

Patent number: 10309198Abstract: A coupling system between tubular members such as tubing, pipes, casing and liner for location in a well bore in which the ends of each tubular have cooperating profiled sections. The profiled sections are arranged coaxially and a radially applied force is applied to form a metal to metal sealed connection. At least one profiled section includes a projection, the projection containing an overhang to the surface of the tubular member, the overhang locking with the opposing profile when the force is applied to provide a coupling with increased burst and collapse rating. Embodiments are provided of arrangements of overhangs such as oppositely directed overhangs and interlocking overhangs.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 2016Date of Patent: June 4, 2019Assignee: Morph Packers LimitedInventors: William Luke McElligott, Neil Philip Thomson

Patent number: 10184302Abstract: Apparatus and method for sealingly connecting tubular members in a wellbore. In a connector apparatus where a portion of a tubular member is radially expanded into sealing contact within a second tubular member, and the second tubular member has circumferential recesses on an inner surface, an annular resilient band member is arranged in the recesses. The annular resilient band member is acted on by the portion of the tubular member during expansion and maintains sealing contact to the portion after expansion.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2015Date of Patent: January 22, 2019Assignee: SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORPORATIONInventors: Neil Thomson, Peter Wood, Daniel O'Brien, David Glen Martin, William Luke McElligott

Patent number: 10125567Abstract: A morphable packer and method of setting the packer in a wellbore. The packer is a tubular member having a throughbore with a central portion having a greater diameter than each end portion with tapered portions there between. Gripping elements are arranged on the tapered portions. Morphing of the tubular member creates a seal between the central portion and an outer cylindrical structure, such as a wellbore or casing, and the gripping elements are moved radially outwards to engage with the cylindrical structure. The gripping elements act as slips which are activated by morphing the tubular member. Embodiments are described with the tubular member being a sleeve on a base pipe and, additionally, sealing and securing features in the form of elastomeric bands, lugs and wedges.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2015Date of Patent: November 13, 2018Assignee: SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORPORATIONInventors: David Glen Martin, Peter Wood, William Luke McElligott

Publication number: 20180080303Abstract: Method and apparatus for delivering fluid at a high pressure to a predetermined location in a downhole environment. A tool including a chamber is located in a wellbore with the chamber being at a first chamber pressure and first chamber volume. Fluid is introduced to the chamber through a first fill mechanism to increase pressure in the chamber and close the chamber at a second chamber pressure and a second chamber volume. Pumping fluid through the tool at a pressure greater than the second chamber pressure activates a pressure intensifier in a second fill mechanism and fluid at a multiplied pressure is added to the chamber. The chamber then contains fluid at an increased third chamber pressure and third chamber volume. An embodiment of a packer being set using the apparatus and method is described.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 11, 2017Publication date: March 22, 2018Inventors: Cameron Hill Radtke, William Luke McElligott

Patent number: 9863208Abstract: An assembly having a sleeve member located over a tubular body, there being a chamber between the two and by increased pressure in the chamber the sleeve member is morphed to secure it to a well bore wall and create a seal between the sleeve and well bore wall to form an isolation barrier. The tubular body is formed in one or more sections so that annular planar faces are created for abutment between the sleeve member and the tubular body so as to remove the requirement for complex fittings and reduce the time of construction.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2015Date of Patent: January 9, 2018Assignee: MORPHPACKERS LIMITEDInventors: David Glen Martin, Davidson Harman, Cameron Radtke, Peter Wood, William Luke McElligott

Publication number: 20160097254Abstract: Apparatus and method for creating a barrier across an annulus in a well bore. First and second morphable sleeves are arranged side by side on a tubular body and sealed thereto to. Adjacent ends of each sleeve meet at a valve housing having a valve arrangement with a first position in which fluid flows from the throughbore of the tubular body to the first and second sleeves and a second position which prevents the flow of fluid between the throughbore, the first chamber and the second chamber. At opposing ends of the sleeves rupturable barrier devices are positioned. The sleeves can be morphed together and by rupturing the barriers, each side of the barrier is active to pressure and collapse is prevented regardless of the pressure differential across the barrier.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 29, 2015Publication date: April 7, 2016Inventors: Peter Wood, William Luke McElligott
