Abstract: A method of separating solid and liquid components of mixtures comprises delivering to the mixture a second liquid, having a density intermediate between those of the solid and liquid components of the mixture, to form a discrete layer above or below the mixture, and allowing the solid to separate into the layer of the second liquid, especially for use in automated analytical systems e.g. automated radioimmunoassay systems. There is also included automated apparatus for delivery of the second liquid of intermediate density and removal of supernatant liquid subsequent to separation.
