The gas spring is biased toward an extended position and urgable toward a retracted state. The drive mechanism moves the door between an open and closed position to selectively allow and block access to a bulkhead opening in the companionway. In the open position, the edge of the door is substantially parallel with the companionway sidewall. In the closed position the edge of the door engages the receiver and the edge is substantially parallel with the sidewall to which the receiver is attached. The drive mechanism includes a pair of struts that are driven by an actuator to move with a scissors-like motion. One end of each strut is fixed in position. The opposite end of each strut has a roller that moves within a slot, with one slot in the door and the other slot in the frame.
