Publication number: 20020179546Abstract: An apparatus for supporting articles, the apparatus extending from a vertically-directed surface. A first supporting member and a second supporting member are mounted at first and second predetermined locations along the vertically-directed surface. A first elongated rod and a second elongated rod are secured respectively to the first and second supporting members and extend substantially horizontally outwardly. An elongated cross member rod is pivotally secured to the free end of the first elongated rod. A tab portion extends from the other end of the cross member rod and lockingly engages the cross member rod to the free end of the second elongated rod upon pivoting of the cross member rod in the direction of the second elongated rod. Articles supporting upon the first and second elongated rods are thereby protected from unauthorized removal from the apparatus.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 5, 2001Publication date: December 5, 2002Inventors: William McMurray, Matthew C. Patent number: 5974856Abstract: A method allows the rapid evaluation of physical properties of chassis elastomeric devices in a motor vehicle. A parametric controller (26) provides a parametric state signal to a elastomer control module (24), which in turn generates an appropriate electrical current signal which is communicated to a variable elastomeric device (22) which includes a magnetorheological elastomer having iron particles embedded therein and a coil operatively associated therewith. When the coil is energized by electrical current signal provided from the elastomer control module (24), a magnetic field is generated which provides predetermined variability in the physical properties of the elastomeric device (22), allowing the rapid evaluation of vehicle performance for given physical properties of the elastomeric device (22).Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1997Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Larry Dean Elie, John Matthew Ginder, Joseph Steven Mark, Mark Edward Nichols, William Mcmurray Stewart

Patent number: 5816587Abstract: A variable stiffness suspension bushing (18) that is useful in a suspension of a motor vehicle to reduce brake shudder includes a shaft or rod (40) connected to a suspension member (12), an inner cylinder (42) fixedly connected to the shaft or rod (40), and an outer cylinder (44) fixedly connected to a chassis member (16). A magnetorheological (MR) elastomer (48), having iron particles embedded therein, is interposed between the inner (42) and outer (44) cylinders, and a coil (54) is disposed about the inner cylinder (42). When the coil (54) is energized by electrical current provided from a suspension control module (20), a variable magnetic field is generated so as to influence the magnetorheological (MR) elastomer (48) whereby variable stiffness values of the elastomer (48) are obtained to provide the bushing (18) with variable stiffness characteristics in order to eliminate compromises heretofore necessary when using single, fixed rate bushings.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1996Date of Patent: October 6, 1998Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, Inc.Inventors: William McMurray Stewart, John Matthew Ginder, Larry Dean Elie, Mark Edward Nichols

Patent number: 5063349Abstract: A gradient current speed-up circuit, for use in a higher-speed NMR imaging system having an associated gradient coil, has a gradient power amplifier receiving an input analog signal controlling amplifier output current, and a transformer having a primary winding and a pair of secondary windings connected in series with the amplifier output and the coil. Semiconductor switching elements selectively connect the primary winding between first and second potential sources, and are turned on and off in selected patterns to cause a current to be suddenly applied to, and removed from, flow through the associated gradient coil; the amplifier output current is changed with the gradient coil current lags behind an amplitude commanded by a master input signal.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1990Date of Patent: November 5, 1991Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Peter B. Roemer, Otward M. Mueller, John N. Park, William McMurray

Patent number: 4745513Abstract: A fault current protection arrangement for a power converter circuit utilizes gate turn-off thyristors as electronic switching devices. A gate turn-off thyristor is connected between relatively positive and negative voltage buses with a circuit interruption device connected in electrical series arrangement with a cathode terminal of the thyristor. A gate driver circuit is connected for providing control signals to the gate terminal of the thyristor for controlling its on and off states during normal operation. Upon detection of the fault current condition, the gate driver circuit is inhibited and the interruption device open-circuits the cathode terminal of the thyristor to divert current in the thyristor into the gate terminal. The resulting anode-to-gate current results in rapid turn-off of the thyristor.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1986Date of Patent: May 17, 1988Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: William McMurray
