  • Patent number: 6854421
Abstract: An improved animal litter with granules having high hardness coupled with high absorbency, thereby rendering the animal litter long lasting and durable, dust and odor free, easy to clean and maintain, and inexpensive in contrast to conventional animal litters. The improved animal litter is a composition comprising granules having calcium bentonite clay, illite clay, and/or kaolinite clay. A method of fabricating the improved animal litter includes the step of providing a composition comprising granules having calcium bentonite clay, illite clay, and/or kaolinite clay. Additional steps may also be included, namely: crushing the composition; screening the composition; kilning the composition; and washing the composition.

  • Patent number: 6810831
Abstract: A soil amendment for use in the running surface of an animal competition arena comprises highly absorbent and durable calcined clay granules. The clay granules are porous and contain micropores and microstructures to capture and retain moisture for release over time. Additionally, because the clay granules are formed of a particularly hard calcined clay, they are sufficient to support the weight of even heavy animals even when mixed with soft soil such as sand. Methods of fabricating the soil amendment and amending soil include methods which provide the soil amendment granules and arena surface with selected hardness and porosity for the particular soil and use of the arena surface.

  • Publication number: 20030222000
Abstract: A cleaning system is disclosed for cleaning contaminants from animal litter. In a first embodiment of the invention, a vacuum and a blower are coupled together and configured so that the blower blows a first fluid stream into animal litter simultaneous with the vacuum drawing a second fluid stream from the animal litter. Relatively light contaminants are drawn into the vacuum while the relatively heavy animal litter is left behind. In a second embodiment of the invention, a cyclonic separator is used to draw the animal litter and the intermixed contaminants into the cyclonic separator simultaneously, and separate the animal litter from the contaminants. The animal litter is returned to the area from which it was removed. The embodiments of the invention have particular use in cleaning horse stalls to separate the horse bedding from the allergens which collect in the horse bedding over time and present health risks to the horse, and return the horse bedding for continued use.

  • Publication number: 20030205205
Abstract: A venting system for an animal stall comprises a ventilation layer and an animal bedding layer. Stall flooring configurations comprising an animal bedding layer having moisture dissipating properties and a ventilation layer which circulates air through the animal bedding layer are most efficient. Additionally, a separation layer and/or an airflow dissipation layer may be included. By providing airflow through the animal bedding layer, moisture from the bedding is transferred to the air and carried away. Moisture within animal bedding encourages growth of bacteria, virus and other coliform pathogens and encourages decomposition. Specific ventilation layer examples include pipes buried in the ground and covered with gravel, clay support tiles, urethane and gravel mixture mats and finished surfaces. Perforations or porosity through the ventilation layer surface to the air passageways therein provide paths for airflow into or out of the ventilation layer.

  • Publication number: 20030192485
Abstract: Animal bedding disinfecting methods and systems are disclosed that facilitate removal of contaminants and pathogens from reusable animal bedding. A disinfecting method includes: preparing soiled animal bedding for disinfecting; disinfecting the soiled animal bedding; and reusing the disinfected animal bedding. A disinfecting system for supplying at least one disinfecting medium to animal bedding includes: a cover configured to create a controlled environment around the animal bedding; and at least one disinfecting medium reservoir associated with the cover configured to supply at least one disinfecting medium to the animal bedding within the controlled environment. A disinfecting system for supplying heat to animal bedding includes a heating cover configured both to create a controlled environment around the animal bedding and to supply heat at a temperature of at least approximately 200° F. for a time period of at least approximately 5 minutes to the animal bedding.
