  • Patent number: 4581454
Abstract: Adducts of aminohydrocarbyl piperazines and urea are prepared in the presence of basic catalysts. These adducts are useful as curing agents for epoxy resins.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 18, 1983
Date of Patent: April 8, 1986
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Jimmy Myers, William P. Coker
  • Patent number: 4568747
Abstract: The invention is a process for obtaining pure BAEE from the crude reaction mixture of H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 and monoethanolamine. It consists of five major operations, which are:1. Separation of 2-aminoethyl hydrogen sulfate (AEHS) from BAEE.2H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 by mixing the molten crude product with crushed ice and filtering out the resulting AEHS which precipitates;2. precisely neutralizing the acidity in the filtrate with alkali or alkaline earth hydroxides, NaOH to form Na.sub.2 SO.sub.4 and free BAEE;3. extracting the BAEE and small amounts of other amines from this neutralized solution with an alcohol solvent having limited solubility in water, such as n-butanol;4. concentrating the amine extract by precipitating the amines in a separate, liquid layer by saturating the extract with carbon dioxide gas; and5. obtaining pure BAEE from this concentrate by distillation (at atmospheric pressure through an efficient distillation column).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 30, 1981
Date of Patent: February 4, 1986
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Russell T. McFadden, William P. Coker
  • Patent number: 4134967
Abstract: Mono- and dibasic alkali metal periodates are prepared by reacting tri-, tetra- and pentabasic alkali metal periodates with a substance having a relative acidity value, pKa, of from 3 to 16 at a temperature of from 0.degree. to 100.degree. C at molar ratios of periodate to moles of acidic substance of 1:1 to 1:1000. The mono- and dibasic alkali metal periodates are useful in oxidizing olefins such as propylene to the corresponding oxide such as propylene oxide.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 19, 1977
Date of Patent: January 16, 1979
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: James E. Hillis, William P. Coker
  • Patent number: 4120877
Abstract: Olefins such as propylene are oxidized to the corresponding oxirane with periodiate compounds such as potassium periodate at temperatures of 100.degree. C to 400.degree. C.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 19, 1977
Date of Patent: October 17, 1978
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: William P. Coker, Robert E. Lane, Jr.
