  • Patent number: 6024229
Abstract: A filter assembly particularly suited for a gasoline fuel pump includes a reusable filter element. The filter assembly has a surrounding housing and a base portion. The base portion including a surface for supporting the filter element and a central stand pipe having a thread formation for engaging an outlet tube of an adapter mounted to the top of the housing. Engagement of the stand pipe to the outlet tube pressing a sealing surface of the housing to a sealing surface of the adapter. The filter element can be retained by a retaining ring threaded onto the stand pipe or by a retaining ring assembly which functions to retain the filter element and also to provide sealing surfaces between the housing, the retaining ring assembly and the adapter. The base can also be made unitary with the housing.

  • Patent number: 5298160
Abstract: A filtration system 10 for use to separate contamination from a liquid is provided, including an elongated tubular housing 14 which has a closed end 16 and an open end 18. Located within the housing 14 is an elongated perforated tubular member 20 which has openings 22. A separating baffle 24 for prohibiting flow between the housing 14 and the tubular member 20 is located near the closed end 16 of housing 14. A first fluid port 39 in the housing 32 is located between the filter element 12 and the open end 18. A second port 32 is located in the housing 14 between the filter element 12 and the closed end 16. The filter element 14 is installed and removed through the open end 16 of the housing 14 and is installed between the housing 14 and the member 20. A cover 66 is placed over the open end 16 of the housing 14 in order that fluid which is contained within the housing 14 may be sealed therein.

  • Patent number: 4832844
Abstract: Leakage under pressure of fluid through the interface of a filter and a filter head or cover casting during removal of the filter is avoided by the use of a stepped gasket at the interface of the filter and the cover casting. The stepped gasket has both axially facing and radially facing sealing surfaces with the latter serving to maintain a seal at the interface over an extended interval during the removal process, which interval is sufficient to enlarge the volume of the system to eliminate any pressure differential from the interior of the system to the ambient.

  • Patent number: 4623560
Abstract: A method of making a filter media for use in a filter employed to separate water and particulate material from a liquid to be purified, such as a hydrocarbon fuel. The method includes the steps of providing a fibrous mat of material adapted to mechanically separate particulate material from a liquid to be purified, applying starch-polyacrylonitrile graft polymer in dry, granular form to the mat, and fixing the co-polymer to the mat by spraying the mat with a volatile solvent containing a small amount of water.

  • Patent number: 4618388
Abstract: A filter media for use in a filter employed to separate water and particulate material from a liquid to be purified, such as a hydrocarbon fuel. The filter media includes a porous material such as glass fiber having a density sufficient to provide the desired mechanical filtration and which carries a water insoluble, water-absorbing material as, for example, a starch-polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer. Also disclosed is a filter employing the media and a method of making the media.

  • Patent number: 4539107
Abstract: A filter for alternate use in filtering methanol-gasoline and ethanol-gasoline blends and sensing phase separation in either blend. The filter includes a composite filter media including a mechanical filter, a methanol sensing material and an ethanol sensing material. Both of the sensing materials are responsive to unduly high levels of the material being sensed in a corresponding blend and swelling to a substantially increased volume. The same are contained in a flow path such as to substantially block the flow path upon swelling of either or both of the sensing materials to thereby provide an indication of phase separation.
