  • Patent number: 4159275
Abstract: Discoloration of maleic anhydride is minimized by first passing the maleic anhydride in molten or dissolved form through a bed of cation exchange resin and then adding to the maleic anhydride a small amount of 3,3'-thiodipropionitrile.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 17, 1978
Date of Patent: June 26, 1979
    Assignee: United States Steel Corporation
    Inventor: William R. Davie
  • Patent number: 4131624
Abstract: Tertiary phosphine oxides are reduced to the corresponding phosphines by halosilanes in the presence of a stoichiometric amount of a primary or secondary amine. The reduction in yield expected using a primary or secondary amine in place of the prior art tertiary amine is not observed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 5, 1977
Date of Patent: December 26, 1978
    Assignee: M&T Chemicals Inc.
Inventors: William R. Davis, Michael D. Gordon
  • Patent number: 4099520
Abstract: An apparatus for the in viva acquisition of fluid samples from birds, fish, whales, and other mammals. The apparatus may also be used with equal proficiency for injecting fluids such as anesthetics, into the bird, mammal or other creature. When used in either manner, the apparatus is fully automatic. Once it is affixed to the animal, fluid samples can be taken or fluids injected while the animal freely moves about in its natural habitat at remote locations from the researcher.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 7, 1977
Date of Patent: July 11, 1978
Inventors: Donald H. Decker, William R. Davis, Duane W. Falleti
  • Patent number: 4045494
Abstract: Triorganophosphines are prepared in high yield and purity by the simultaneous addition of an organomagnesium halide and a phosphorus trihalide to a reaction mixture in a 3:1 molar ratio, respectively. The reaction mixture also contains a linear ether or a heterocyclic ether wherein the ring contains 5 or 6 atoms.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 6, 1975
Date of Patent: August 30, 1977
    Assignee: M&T Chemicals Inc.
Inventors: Vilas M. Chopdekar, William R. Davis
  • Patent number: 4013555
Abstract: A process for reducing BOD in aqueous food processing plant wastes which comprises subjecting such wastes to the following series of sequential steps:A. adjusting the pH of the waste to 3 or less to form finely divided suspended particles;B. readjusting the pH of the waste with sodium aluminate to a value within the range of 6-7.5;C. flocculating the particles with an anionic acrylamide polymer; and thenD. removing and collecting the flocculated particles from the food processing plant wastes.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 24, 1976
Date of Patent: March 22, 1977
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
    Inventor: William R. Davis
  • Patent number: 4007557
Abstract: An inertia insensitive disconnectable drive linkage connects a power operator to a swinging door and comprises a door bracket fixed to the door and an arm operator pivoted thereto. A latch positively locks the operator arm to the bracket during normal powered swing of the door. A cam on the door frame releases the latch when the door is swung beyond the door closed position in the opposite direction of opening during emergency operation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 3, 1975
Date of Patent: February 15, 1977
    Assignee: The Stanley Works
Inventors: William R. Davis, William H. Flaherty, Jr.
  • Patent number: 3997461
Abstract: An antifoulant coating composition and preparation method in which the final composition is composed of two Components A and B mixed immediately before the composition is applied, and usually an inert filler introduced at least in part via Component A. The active ingredient of Component A is a base formed of coal-tar pitch or equivalent and epoxy resin. The active ingredients of Component B are a curing agent for the epoxy resin and a solid organotin toxicant. Component B may be either a slurry of needle-like crystals of toxicant, or the toxicant may be dissolved in a suitable solvent. In the latter case the toxicant precipitates as needle-like crystals when Components A and B are mixed. The invention produces a composition of a viscosity which makes it easy to apply.

Date of Patent: December 14, 1976
    Assignee: Porter Paint Co.
    Inventor: William R. Davie
  • Patent number: 3973281
Abstract: A bed comprising a platform composed essentially of an expanded polystyrene foam mattress support base or platform upon which a conventional mattress may be supported. The polystyrene foam platform has a panel and an open lattice of flat ribs therebelow with a taut sheet of paper across the bottom.
