  • Patent number: 6188474
Abstract: A sample cell for use in spectroscopy includes two cell portions that are mutually adjustable to enable a user to vary the cross sectional geometry of sample cell flow path thereof between at least two discrete configurations or positions. In a first position, the flow path may be provided with a relatively small cross-sectional area to provide a relatively small pathlength and generate high velocity fluid flow therethrough. The small pathlength enables use of relatively small sample volumes and facilitates optical measurement of samples, such as blood, which have relatively high optical density, absorbance or light scattering properties. In a second position, the flow path provides a larger cross-section adapted to permit larger agglomerations or clots to pass through the flow path to facilitate cleaning of the sample cell.

  • Patent number: 4764021
Abstract: Disclosed is a fluid flow sonic energy reactor particularly adapted for blood hemolysis. An ultrasonic generator is provided with a tapered resonator, the small diameter end of which forms one planar surface of the reactor cavity. The reactor includes an anvil, one end of which has a central surface region that is closely spaced from the small diameter end of the tapered resonator. An O-ring is in contact with the periphery of the small diameter end of the resonator as well as the adjacent surface of the anvil to form therebetween a sealed chamber. First and second bores extend through the anvil to the central surface region thereof to introduce fluid into the chamber and remove fluid therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4130824
Abstract: A recorder pen is mounted on the sample scanning stage of an electrophoretic sample analyzer. Movement of the stage scans the sample optically while, at the same time, the recorder pen produces an analog record of the optical analysis. A sample holder is mounted in the stage for detented movement in the direction orthogonal to the scanning motion of the sample stage. The sample holder can be moved to one of several detented positions so that different tracks of the samples are scanned.

  • Patent number: 4117338
Abstract: An automatic recording fluorometer/densitometer has an integral viewer for viewing and photographing fluorescent samples which have been applied to a clear, thin-film substrate. Light from an ultraviolet source is on the opposite side of the sample from the viewer when the sample is placed in a viewer holder. When the sample is placed in a recording holder, light from the same source is on the opposite side of the sample from the recorder optics. By having the source on the opposite side from the optics, it is possible to have the source much closer to the sample and to thereby reduce the stray ultraviolet light in the instrument. Another source emits visible light for densitometric analysis of the sample. A movable filter holder can be indexed to different positions for placing an ultraviolet filter or one of the densitometric filters in the optical path between the sources and the recording device.
