  • Patent number: 8146751
Abstract: A filter assembly where the filter element is designed to connect directly to the spud of a vehicle fluid system, for example an engine lubrication system, a fuel system, or a hydraulic system. This provides a direct connection between the filtered fluid and the fluid system. The need for a seal between the top endplate and the nutplate, as well as the coil spring within the shell, which are found in conventional spin-on filter assemblies can be eliminated, which reduces inventory and the number of parts forming the filter assembly, and facilitates manufacturing of the filter assembly.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 25, 2008
Date of Patent: April 3, 2012
    Assignee: Cummins Filtration IP, Inc.
Inventors: Charles W. Hawkins, Ismail C. Bagci, William R. Knox, Jeffrey A. Husband

  • Publication number: 20100126924
Abstract: A filter assembly having anti-rotation features that prevent rotation of a shell relative to a nutplate and a method of forming the disclosed filter assembly are described. The disclosed method radially deforms a flange of the housing to the shape of the pre-formed anti-rotation features, and does not utilize a secondary operation such as a staking operation to stake selected edge portions.

  • Patent number: 5080787
Abstract: A high-pressure filter assembly which includes a cover or nutplate secured to a housing via a sidewall portion of the housing deformed into a groove formed in the cover sidewall. The cover and housing are formed such that the cover can be properly seated upon the housing prior to seaming without special locators or beads formed in the container sidewall. A method and apparatus for forming the filter assembly are also disclosed.
