    Abstract: A method of tempering a glass sheet heated to a tempering temperature includes cooling the glass sheet at a first heat transfer coefficient at a first quench station and cooling the glass sheet at a second heat transfer coefficient at a second quench station downstream of the first quench station. The second heat transfer coefficient is greater than the first heat transfer coefficient. In a multistage process of the invention, a plurality of quench stations could be used with each downstream quench station having a larger heat transfer coefficient than the previous upstream quench station.

    Abstract: A solar reflecting mirror includes a shaped glass substrate having a focal area, a reflective coating over its convex surface and a sodium ion barrier layer over its concave surface. The shaped substrate has a strain pattern having a radial tension strain at the bottom area, and circumferential compression strain at the periphery of the substrate. As the distance from the periphery of the shaped substrate increases, the circumferential compression strain decreases to a “transition line” where circumferential tension strain begins. As the distance from the transition line in a direction toward the bottom area of the glass substrate increases, the circumferential tension increases. To compensate for the strain pattern in the shaped glass substrate to avoid buckling of, and surface cracks of, the barrier layer, the barrier layer including an oxide of silicon and aluminum thickness, among other things is varied on. A method of making the solar mirror from shaped sections is also discussed.

    Abstract: One or more sheets, e.g. two glass sheets heated to their deformation temperature are shaped by positioning the sheets on a sheet supporting surface of an outline mold. The outline mold and press face of a shaping member are moved relative to one another to bias the marginal edge portions of the upper sheet against the press face to establish an enclosure around the peripheral edges of the sheets. Vacuum is applied to the peripheral edges of the sheets to pull the air from between the sheets, and from between the press face and adjacent sheet surface as positive or atmospheric pressure is applied to bottom sheet to move the sheets against the press face. Optionally a vacuum can be pulled through passageways in the press face during the shaping of the sheets and pressurized air moved through the passageways after the sheets are shaped to move the sheets away from the press face.

    Abstract: A vacuum insulating unit has a pair of glass sheets spaced from one another by a plurality of plastic supports. The supports have one end secured to one of the sheets and a low friction material on the other end. A flexible metal edge retainer is secured to sheets to provide a sealed compartment between the sheets. Air in the compartment is removed to put the compartment under negative pressure. A getter is provided in the compartment to adsorb any gas therein during sealing or using the unit. One of the sheets may have an environmental coating.Methods are disclosed for fabricating the unit and the supports.
