Patent number: 11418475Abstract: In embodiments, an apparatus for computing may include a receiver; a speaker; circuitry coupled to the receiver and speaker; and a service to be operated by the circuitry to receive an instance of a message via the receiver, and to conditionally affect a provision, through the speaker, an audio notification alert of the receipt of the instance of the message. In embodiments, to conditionally affect the provision may include to bypass or cause to bypass of the provision of the audio notification alert, on determination that another audio notification alert has been or will be provided by another proximally located apparatus for receiving another instance of the same message. Other embodiments may be described and claimed.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2020Date of Patent: August 16, 2022Assignee: Intel CorporationInventors: Mike Hibbett, Jelle Seis, Joseph Jardine, William Rafferty, Diarmaid O'Cualain

Publication number: 20190029563Abstract: Methods and apparatus for detecting breathing patterns are disclosed herein. An example wearable device includes a frame to be worn by a user in an environment. The example wearable device includes a first microphone carried by the frame. The first microphone is to collect breathing sound data from the user. An example wearable device includes a second microphone carried by the frame. The second microphone is to collect noise data from the environment. The example wearable device includes at least one processor to modify the breathing sound data based on the environmental noise data to generate modified breathing sound data and identify a breathing pattern based on the modified breathing sound data.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 26, 2017Publication date: January 31, 2019Inventors: Jelle Sels, Julien Chevrier, Srikanth Vasuki, William Rafferty, Diarmaid O'Cualain

Patent number: 5216427Abstract: A satellite communications system includes an orbiting communications satellite for relaying communications to and from a plurality of ground stations, and a network management center for making connections via the satellite between the ground stations in response to connection requests received via the satellite from the ground stations, the network management center being configured to provide both open-end service and closed-end service. The network management center of one embodiment is configured to provides both types of service according to a predefined channel access protocol that enables the ground stations to request the type of service desired. The channel access protocol may be configured to adaptively allocate channels to open-end service and closed-end service according to changes in the traffic pattern and include a free-access tree algorithm that coordinates collision resolution among the ground stations.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1990Date of Patent: June 1, 1993Assignee: California Institute of TechnologyInventors: Tsun-Yee Yan, William Rafferty, Khaled I. Patent number: 4647864Abstract: A variable-delay, sine-cosine non-coherent demodulator recovers digital data angle-modulated upon a radio-frequency (RF) carrier signal, by frequency conversion of the carrier signal to a selected IF frequency, which is ideally equal to one-fourth of a sample frequency supplied to the demodulator. The IF signal is sampled at the sample frequency, and the samples are then sorted to provide a pair of baseband quadrature-phased I and Q signals. Each of the I and Q signals is delayed by a variable first delay T.sub.1 to provide first-delayed in-phase I.sub.1 and first-delayed quadrature-phased Q.sub.1 signals. These signals are then delayed by a second delay T.sub.2 to provide twice-delayed in-phase I.sub.2 and twice-delay quadrature-phase Q.sub.2 signals. The sum of the two delays is a constant related to the sample frequency, which itself is related to the data bit rate, but the first delay T.sub.1 is variably dependent upon the frequency offset between the IF signal and the sample signal.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1986Date of Patent: March 3, 1987Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: William Rafferty, Gary J.
