Patent number: 8093736Abstract: A hydrokinetic device having a water surface float tethered to a submerged buoyant housing is provided with mechanisms for optimizing the amount of wave energy extracted from the waves by the device. Based on wave conditions, the optimization functionalities include controlling the depth of the housing to produce wave shoaling or storm avoidance, as well as to perform continuous phase control and load control for the purpose of matching the response frequency of the device to the frequency of the incident waves.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 2009Date of Patent: January 10, 2012Assignee: The Trustees of The Stevens Institute of TechnologyInventor: Michael William Raftery

Publication number: 20100133893Abstract: A chair uses multiple elastic bands to form the seating surfaces. The elastic bands are held in place with a mounting bracket which facilitates easy assembly of the chair and reduces the likelihood of breakage or improper assembly of the elastic bands. The elastic bands are positioned nearly level with the chair side rails and mounting bracket, and the elastic bands cover the mounting screws to provide a chair which is more comfortable and more aesthetically pleasing.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 22, 2009Publication date: June 3, 2010Inventors: William Raftery, Derek Perkins

Publication number: 20080217921Abstract: A system for converting fluid surface wave energy into electrical energy. The system includes an electrical generating device, positioned in a waterproof housing, for producing electrical energy. A float, deployed on the fluid surface, is attached to the generating device when the housing is submerged within the fluid. Vertical motion of the surface waves produce vertical motion of the float, which turns and powers the electrical generating device. A plurality of anchors, positioned on the fluid floor, are attached to the housing so that the housing may be positioned proximate the fluid surface for creating a shoaling effect when a plurality of systems are deployed on the fluid surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 5, 2008Publication date: September 11, 2008Inventor: MICHAEL WILLIAM RAFTERY

Patent number: 7234773Abstract: A chair having a backrest with a Y-shaped member. The member being affixed to the center of the top rail of the backrest frame at one end. The other end of the Y-shaped member connects to backrest fabric, pulls it rearward, and holds the backrest fabric in tension using a pair of retractors. The backrest fabric is secured to the retractors by a welt cord contained within a chamber formed in each retractor. The welt cord is sewn into a fabric sheath that is, in turn, stitched to the backrest fabric. The member is biased to flex rearward when the backrest fabric moves rearward from an at-rest position.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2005Date of Patent: June 26, 2007Assignee: HNI Technologies Inc.Inventors: William Raftery, Paul Meyers, John Heyder

Publication number: 20070114341Abstract: A wrist support dispenser adapted to be mounted on a work surface for retaining a user's wrist and forearm in a comfortable position. The wrist support includes a body having an arcuate upper surface and is adhesively attached to a work surface to support the user's forearm and wrist when working at a desk or table. A cover plate may also be provided to secure and protect a sheet of graphics applied between the top arcuate surface and the cover plate. The cover plate is snap-fitted onto the body.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 1, 2006Publication date: May 24, 2007Applicant: RAFTERY DESIGN, INC.Inventor: William Raftery

Patent number: 4700430Abstract: A support for an article of furniture is readily interchangeable between having a glide exposed to the ground and a caster exposed to the ground with the glide being stored within a shroud. The furniture remains level in either embodiment since the total length of the support will stay the same. Minor adjustments in the length of the support are made by rotating the shroud.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1985Date of Patent: October 20, 1987Inventor: William Raftery
