  • Publication number: 20050105091
Abstract: Apparatus for acquiring an image of a specimen comprising a cassette having an optical portion holding a specimen array on a TIR surface and being removably matable to a processing portion having a polarized light beam source and a processing polarization-sensitive portion to image the spatially distributed charges in polarization of the specimen array. In one form the array optical portion comprises a transparent slide having a bottom surface with first and second gratings located to direct polarized light to the TIR surface and to direct light reflected by that (TIR) surface to an imager, respectively. The apparatus may include a flow cell integral with the optical portion as well as means for selecting the direction and wavelength of the polarized light.

  • Publication number: 20050096687
Abstract: A hair transplant apparatus and method capture a hair graft into a hair graft chamber readily aligned for implantation into the human scalp. The hair graft can be placed into the hair graft chamber manually or mechanically (e.g., by vacuum). A hair transplant apparatus includes a gas-permeable stopper for utilizing gas flow to load and/or implant a hair graft. Another hair transplant apparatus includes a gas-permeable rod inside a housing. Vacuum may be utilized to load a hair graft into the hair graft chamber. The rod may be advanced toward an open distal end of the chamber so the end of the rod becomes substantially flush with the distal end, thereby pushing the hair graft out of the chamber and into the pre-made wound. Advantageously, the chamber is aligned with the direction of the pre-made wound allowing the hair graft to slide easily into the pre-made wound without damage.

  • Publication number: 20050030535
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for scanning of a microarray to provide an image of the microarray are disclosed. Data related to change in polarization state of a scanning light beam for individual points or lines or other portion of the microarray are collected and processed to image the microarray at high resolution and speed.

  • Publication number: 20050024642
Abstract: An imaging method and apparatus are provided, including a light source emitting a polarized light beam, and an optical assembly including a control layer and/or a light reflection surface. The control layer advantageously allows for control over the properties of a generated evanescent wave to optimize an image of a specimen array within the evanescent wave. The light reflection surface includes coupling means used to couple a receptor/capture agent advantageously allowing for flexible control over receptor specific regions.

  • Publication number: 20030224370
Abstract: A probe-target reaction is made more recognizable by the provision of a mass-enhancing and/or evanescent-field-perturbing amplifier element which reacts uniquely with and binds to the probe-target pair to provide increased mass. Where the probe-target pair is hybridized dsDNA, a suitable mass-enhancing amplifier is anti-double stranded DNA mouse IgM. In examples with sufficient sequence pairs in the probe-target combination, a sequence-specific minor-groove-binding polyamide can be used that carries biotin which can be amplified by streptavidin in a suitable carrier. In a preferred embodiment, a plurality of probes are immobilized at the sites of a microarray, each probe being specific to a different target. Optics utilizing total internal reflection are described for observing perturbation of the evanescent field.
