  • Publication number: 20180370839
Abstract: A method of making articles from preformed materials includes placing a preformed material on a mold such that a non-quality region of the preformed material contacts the mold and a quality region of the preformed material is free of contact with the mold. A non-contact support is provided to the quality region to control sagging of the quality region. A reformable area of the preformed material is formed into a select shape by contacting the reformable area with a forming tool while restricting contact between the forming tool and the reformable area to the non-quality region. After the forming of the reformable area, an article is extracted from the quality region.

  • Patent number: 8033137
Abstract: Methods for reducing stress on an isopipe during manufacture of a drawn glass sheet are disclosed including a method comprising providing an isopipe having a root, heating the isopipe to a predetermined temperature, maintaining the isopipe at the predetermined temperature for a period of time sufficient to relieve at least a portion of a tensile stress on the isopipe root, coupling the isopipe to a down-comer, and then providing glass to the isopipe. Also disclosed is a method comprising heating an isopipe such that the temperature difference between the weir and the root of the isopipe, after heating and prior to coupling, is less than about 100° C. A method comprising application of a compressive force to the ends of an isopipe root during heating is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20090044496
Abstract: An apparatus for sealing a glass package by applying a force to a glass assembly while simultaneously irradiating a sealing material disposed between the two glass substrates with a beam of radiation. The applied force is translated in unison with the radiation beam. The radiation cures and/or melts the sealing material, depending upon the sealing material. The applied force beneficially improves contact between the glass substrates and the sealing material during the sealing process, therefore assisting in achieving a hermetic seal between the substrates.

Also disclosed is a method comprising heating an isopipe such that the temperature difference between the weir and the root of the isopipe, after heating and prior to coupling, is less than about 100° C. A method comprising application of a compressive force to the ends of an isopipe root during heating is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6045935
Abstract: Fuel cell designs incorporating non-planar inorganic electrolyte membranes offer improved mechanical and thermal shock resistance for mobile power generation systems, e.g., for high temperature fuel cell applications using liquid fuel (diesel and gasoline) and air for automobile power plants and other power systems requiring only intermittent high-temperature fuel cell operation.
