  • Patent number: 10287731
Abstract: An industrial roll includes: a substantially cylindrical metallic core; a rubber base layer that is adhered to and circumferentially overlies the core; a rubber top stock layer that circumferentially overlies the base layer; and a polyurethane coating that circumferentially overlies the top stock layer. In this configuration, the roll can provide improved abrasion-resistance, sheet release properties, and/or toughness compared to a roll with a rubber cover, but may provide these properties in a cover that is softer than a typical polyurethane cover.

  • Patent number: 9121686
Abstract: A method of determining the width of a nip formed by an industrial roll and a mating structure includes the steps of: providing an industrial roll having a cylindrical core and a polymeric cover surrounding the core, the industrial roll further comprising a plurality of pressure sensors mounted in the roll (optionally distributed in a helical pattern on the roll about a longitudinal axis of the roll); positioning the industrial roll in contact with the mating structure to form a nip; rotating the industrial roll; receiving pressure signals from the plurality of pressure sensors at a controller; and in the controller, utilizing the pressure signals from the pressure sensors to determine the width of the nip at locations on the roll associated with the pressure sensors.

  • Patent number: 7994257
Abstract: A composition suitable for use in a packer element for a wellbore includes: a hydrocarbon-swellable polymer, the hydrocarbon-swellable polymer present in the composition in an amount between about 10 and 30 percent by weight; an oil-resistant polymer, the oil-resistant polymer present in the composition in an amount between about 10 and 30 percent by weight; and a hydrocarbon swelling agent, the hydrocarbon swelling agent present in the composition in an amount between about 15 and 60 percent by weight. A composition as described may have a good balance of the swelling properties of the hydrocarbon-swellable polymer and the mechanical properties of the oil-resistant polymer. These properties may be useful in a packer element for a wellbore.

  • Publication number: 20090205841
Abstract: A packer system for a wellbore includes a tubular member and a packer element having an inner layer that circumferentially overlies the tubular member and an outer layer that circumferentially overlies the inner layer. The inner layer includes an elastomer that swells upon contact with a swelling fluid. The outer layer includes a material that provides at least a partial barrier to the swelling fluid.

  • Publication number: 20090205817
Abstract: A packer assembly comprises a tubular member and a packer system that circumferentially overlies the tubular member. The packer system includes end portions and a central portion disposed between the end portions. The central portion and the end portions are formed of material that swells when contacted with a swelling fluid. The central and end portions are constructed to swell upon contact with the swelling fluid so that the central portion swells to a diameter defined by a wall of the wellbore more rapidly than the end portions. In such a configuration, the central portion of the packer system can be fully swollen prior to the full swelling of the end portions.

  • Patent number: 6752908
Abstract: A shoe press includes: a first member; a second member; a substantially cylindrical belt; and a processing unit. The first member has a convex pressing surface. The second member includes a shoe with a concave pressing surface substantially complimentary to the convex pressing surface. The second member further includes a pair of substantially circular head plates rotatably mounted on axially opposed ends thereof. The belt is fixed to, extends between, and is rotatable with the head plates such that a portion of the belt passes between the convex pressing surface and the concave pressing surface. The belt includes embedded therein a communications cable having a plurality of sensors configured to generate signals responsive to an operating parameter of the shoe press. The processing unit is in communication with the communications cable and processes signals generated by the sensors.
