  • Patent number: 7168708
Abstract: A seal segment for a turbine is provided having labyrinth teeth and a brush seal disposed along the labyrinth teeth. A plurality of the segments for a seal ring. The segments are separable from each other so that the seal can retract. Each segment has two ends, each of which abuts another segment, with those ends lying along a radius (when looking down the shaft of the turbine). The brush disposed in each segment has ends that do not lie along a radius, but fit together in a tongue and groove configuration when the seal segments come together to form a seal.

  • Patent number: 6812003
Abstract: Peptides and methods of their use for inhibiting drug and radiation-therapy resistance in cancerous cells in which efficacy of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy of a patient is enhanced by administration of an effective amount of a peptide that inhibits cell adhesion mediated drug resistance (CAM-DR). Preferably, the peptide comprises D-amino acids having the sequence: kmviywkag  (RZ-3) or is a variant or modified version thereof. The peptide is preferably administered to the patient prior to chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. • Publication number: 20030004140
Abstract: A method for inhibiting cell adhesion mediated drug resistance wherein an effective amount of a bisphosphonate compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable bisphosphonate salt is administered to a patient having cancer, whereby the efficacy of chemotherapy or radiotherapy directed against the cancer is enhanced. Preferably, the bisphosphonate compound is etidronate, clodronate, pamidronate, or zoledronate. The bisphosphonate compound is preferably administered to the patient prior to the administration of chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Inhibition of cell adhesion mediated drug resistance (CAM-DR) by bisphosphonate in multiple myeloma cells is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5628617
Abstract: In a steam turbine having a main inlet pipe which introduces steam to a nozzle chamber through the turbine casings and a bell seal assembly for sealing the inlet pipe relative to the casings and the nozzle chamber, the bell seal assembly including a bell seal disposed in the nozzle chamber, and a retainer nut sleeved by the bell seal and threadedly engaged in the inlet pipe, the improvement which comprises: the bell seal being replaced by a ring carrier, a stack of inner and outer sealing rings loosely sleeved on the ring carrier, the material of the inner rings having a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than the material of the ring carrier and the outer rings being made from a material having a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the material of the nozzle chamber.

  • Patent number: 5547340
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved spillstrip ring for use in forming a tip seal in an axial flow elastic fluid turbine having one or more stages. Each turbine stage has a diaphragm and a rotor. The spillstrip ring consists of an arrangement of spillstrips mounted in a circumferentially groove formed in the diaphragm. Each spillstrip includes a body portion having a longitudinal extent, a vertical extent, and a horizontal extent, and is particularly adapted for mounting in the circumferential groove in the diaphragm. At least one projection extends from the body portion substantially parallel to the vertical extent thereof, and along the longitudinal extent of the body portion. Such projection has tapered side walls which converge to a tip seal that continuously extends along the longitudinal extent of the body portion.

  • Patent number: 5487549
Abstract: In an elastic fluid turbine employing a segmented packing ring mounted in a ring-like stationary holder or diaphragm having upper and lower half-parts which meet at a horizontal joint and circumscribe a rotor to minimize leakage between the components, interfitting butt ends on certain of the packing ring segments at the diaphragm horizontal joint, and cam pins on the diaphragm at the horizontal joint and engageable with slots in said certain of the packing ring segments for accurately positioning the packing ring segments relative to the horizontal joint.

  • Patent number: 5464226
Abstract: In a steam turbine having retractable, spring-loaded, segmented, arcuate packaging rings and holders suspended in the turbine casing and circumscribing the turbine rotor, the packing rings and holders being interengaged by a hook fit and the packing rings being movable by steam pressure between opened and closed position relative to the holders and the rotor, the improvement which comprises providing each of the packing rings and holders with identical mating, curved profiles for providing full contact between the packing rings and holders in the opened position of the packing rings.
