Patent number: 8982513Abstract: A disk drive head gimbal assembly includes a laminated flexure with a tongue having an actuated portion that rotates about an axis of rotation by expansion of a first adhered piezoelectric element relative to a second adhered piezoelectric element. A non-actuated portion of the tongue adjoins and forms a bridge between two outrigger beams, with a dimple contact location that is in contact with a dimple of the load beam and through which the axis of rotation passes. A read head is adhered, closer to its leading end than to its trailing end, to the actuated portion of the tongue. Each of the first and second piezoelectric elements has an anchored end that is adhered to the bridge, closer to the trailing end of the read head, and an opposing actuated end adhered to the actuated portion of the tongue, closer to the leading end of the read head.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2013Date of Patent: March 17, 2015Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Jifang Tian, Jian Yang, Qiang Yang, William S. Wang, Yih-Jen D. Chen

Each of the head mounting plates is connected to the non-actuated portion of the tongue by an elongated compliant member that is oriented radially with respect to the dimple contact location.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2013Date of Patent: August 5, 2014Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Jifang Tian, Jian Yang, Qiang Yang, William S. Publication number: 20090018467Abstract: A punch biopsy apparatus for removing all or a portion of a suspect dermal growth. A punch biopsy apparatus has: a hollow cylinder body; a coring blade at the base of the hollow cylinder body; at least one scooping blade pivotally secured by an axle and a pair of pivot seats within the cylinder body, where each scooping blade is semicircular, a longitudinally-moveable plunger secured within the hollow cylinder, where the plunger has at least one plunger leg for contacting each scooping blade, and each plunger leg transfers longitudinal plunger movement to its respective scooping blade, thereby causing rotational scooping-blade movement. This device helps minimize bleeding and minimize damage to the biopsy sample being retrieved.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 21, 2008Publication date: January 15, 2009Inventors: KWOK WAI CHIU, Timothy Chiu, William S. Patent number: 5244239Abstract: A latch assembly includes a permanent magnet which is fixedly connected with a housing. A pair of pole pieces are connected with opposite poles of the permanent magnet. A coil extends around a portion one of the pole pieces. A keeper is mounted for pivotal movement between an initial position in which the keeper engages both of the pole pieces and a release position in which the keeper is spaced from the pole pieces. The coil is energizable to oppose the permanent magnet and release the keeper for pivotal movement from the initial position to the release position. A retainer surface is connected with the keeper and retains a striker and door against movement relative to the housing when the latch assembly is in an engaged condition. The retainer surface and striker cooperate to transmit force along a path which extends through an axis about which the keeper pivots. The retainer surface has an arcuate surface area with a center of curvature disposed on the axis about which the keeper pivots.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1992Date of Patent: September 14, 1993Assignee: Eaton CorporationInventor: William S. Patent number: 4295111Abstract: Disclosed is a magnetically latching solenoid including a pull-in coil and a delatching coil. Each of the coils is constructed with a combination of wire materials, including material of low temperature coefficient of resistivity to enable the solenoid to be operated at cryogenic temperatures while maintaining sufficient coil resistance. An armature is spring-biased toward a first position, that may extend beyond the field of force of a permanent magnet. When voltage is temporarily applied across the pull-in magnet, the induced electromagnetic forces overcomes the spring force and pulls the armature to a second position within the field of the permanent magnet, which latches the armature in the pulled-in position. Application of voltage across the delatching coil induces electromagnetic force which at least partially temporarily nullifies the field of the permanent magnet at the armature, thereby delatching the armature and allowing the spring to move the armature to the first position.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1979Date of Patent: October 13, 1981Inventors: Robert A. Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, with respect to an invention of Frosch, William S. Wang
