Patent number: 5295396Abstract: A positive displacement piston flow meter for measuring air flow comprising a hollow flowtube, preferably arranged in a vertical orientation, having a movable piston disposed in the flowtube for movement between a starting position, preferably at the bottom end of the piston stroke, and an elevated position at the top end of the piston stroke. The piston is reciprocated by means of a pressure relief control valve assembly which controls the ascent and descent of the piston. The piston is physically connected to the pressure relief control valve assembly by means of a flexible string, which causes the piston to automatically close the valve assembly for automatic operation on reaching the bottom end of the piston stroke and to reverse direction.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1993Date of Patent: March 22, 1994Assignee: Gilian Instrument CorporationInventors: Hill S. Lalin, William T. Fleming, Jr.

Patent number: 5193389Abstract: The reciprocating piston positive displacement flow meter of the present invention comprises a hollow flow tube having a movable piston for reciprocal movement between opposite ends and a solenoid controlled valve assembly having a sliding valve member for reversing the direction of fluid flow through the flow tube in response to the activation and deactivation of a solenoid. The solenoid is switched from an activated state at one end of the piston stroke to an unactivated state at the opposite end.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1991Date of Patent: March 16, 1993Inventor: William T. Fleming, Jr.

Patent number: 5183116Abstract: An extended fire-extinguishing discharge system discharges a fire-extinguishing material at a predetermined mass flow rate. The extended discharge system includes an extended discharge container filled with a fire-extinguishing material, at least one discharge nozzle connected with the extended discharge container for discharging the fire-extinguishing material into a protected space, and a variable pressure controller interconnected between the container and the discharge nozzle. The fire extinguishing material flows through the variable pressure controller which produces a regulated pressure as a function of the inlet pressure to the variable pressure controller. By varying the regulated pressure, the extended discharge system of the present invention is able to maintain a mass flow rate within a predetermined optimum range at any temperature of the fire-extinguishing material.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1991Date of Patent: February 2, 1993Assignee: Walter Kidde Aerospace, Inc.Inventor: William T. Patent number: 4974812Abstract: A valve for controlling release of a pressurized fluid comprising a housing having a fluid chamber with an inlet and an outlet port. A piston within the housing is slidably movable between a sealed closed position and an open position. A collapsed support structure, when in a rigid condition retains the piston in the closed position. When the support means is in a collapsed condition, fluid pressure will cause the piston to slide to the open position of the valve. This support structure includes a pair of elongated supports oriented in one of a dead-center locked condition when the piston is sealed, and in an off-center collapsed condition allowing the piston to move to its open position.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1989Date of Patent: December 4, 1990Assignee: Walter Kidde Aerospace, Inc.Inventor: William T. Fleming

Patent number: 4931000Abstract: An electrically driven double-acting diaphragm air pump having a diaphragm-driven system including an eccentric for the motor shaft, a freely movable yoke having a solid framework solely supported by the diaphragm system with one end connected to a first diaphragm assembly, and at an opposite end to a second diaphragm assembly, and with the yoke having a large central opening. The eccentric is coupled directly to the solid framework through a yoke driver. The yoke driver is rotatably connected to the solid framework at one end of the framework adjacent to the first diaphragm assembly, and is coupled to the eccentric through ball bearings, with the opposite end of the yoke driver suspended for free movement within the large central opening of the solid yoke framework.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 1989Date of Patent: June 5, 1990Assignee: Gilian Instrument Corp.Inventor: William T. Fleming, Jr.

Patent number: 4904987Abstract: An air sampling and alarm control system for detecting the presence of a toxic contaminant in the atmosphere and for providing an audible alarm when insufficient gas flow is present in the system to adequately test for the presence of the contaminant. The alarm control is provided by a pressure switch which is electrically connected in circuit with an audible alarm and pneumatically connected in circuit with the gas flow line connecting the sampling pump to the sampling detector.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1987Date of Patent: February 27, 1990Inventors: William T. Fleming, Hill S. Lalin

Patent number: 4896548Abstract: The fluid sampler of the present invention comprises a single-acting pump assembly having a housing, an inlet port and an outlet port, a valve unit including a single inlet valve and a single outlet valve, a control diaphragm mounted in the housing to form a pumping chamber in communication with said inlet valve and said outlet valve, a reciprocative piston for reciprocating said control diaphragm, a motor for driving said piston with said piston being located in a substantially enclosed cavity separated from said pumping chamber by said control diaphragm and a damping assembly integrated in said pump housing for providing a highly damped fluid flow through said pump.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1988Date of Patent: January 30, 1990Assignee: Gilian Instrument Corp.Inventors: Hill S. Lalin, William T. Fleming

Patent number: 4762004Abstract: A gas flow measuring device comprising a flowtube, a soap bubble generator for generating a film of soap, a manually adjustable member for controlling the transfer of the soap film to the flowtube and a set of detectors spaced apart along the flowtube for measuring the time displacement of the soap bubble between the spaced positions of the detectors. The manually adjustable member is preferably a hoop surrounding the flowtube. A soap bubble is formed by immersing the hoop into the soap solution and withdrawing it. A soap film is transferred to the flowtube by raising the hoop to the mouth of the flowtube. In a second embodiment, a sleeve with slots surrounds a flowtube with slots. The sleeve is rotated into alignment with the flowtube to transfer a soap film.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1986Date of Patent: August 9, 1988Assignee: Gilian Instrument Corp.Inventors: Hill S.
