  • Patent number: 8250530
Abstract: One embodiment is directed to a method that may be practiced in a declarative application with composites organized hierarchically, including composites in the same hierarchy, but not directly related by direct intervening child/parent relationships. The method includes acts for providing a link between composites unrelated by direct intervening child/parent relationships. The method includes rendering data at a user interface. The data is associated with a first composite in a declarative application. The method further includes detecting, at the user interface, user interaction with the rendered data. As a result of detecting user interaction with the rendered data, the method further includes defining a composite path to the first composite. The method further includes providing the name of the path as a local variable to a second composite such that the second composite can interact with the data.

  • Patent number: 8247136
Abstract: Novel proton exchange membrane fuel cells and direct methanol fuel cells with nanostructured components are configured with higher precious metal utilization rate at the electrodes, higher power density, and lower cost. To form a catalyst, platinum or platinum-ruthenium nanoparticles are deposited onto carbon-based materials, for example, single-walled, dual-walled, multi-walled and cup-stacked carbon nanotubes. The deposition process includes an ethylene glycol reduction method. Aligned arrays of these carbon nanomaterials are prepared by filtering the nanomaterials with ethanol. A membrane electrode assembly is formed by sandwiching the catalyst between a proton exchange membrane and a diffusion layer that form a first electrode. The second electrode may be formed using a conventional catalyst. The several layers of the MEA are hot pressed to form an integrated unit.

  • Patent number: 8249228
Abstract: Techniques for transmitting information to a recipient under their control are described. In some situations, the techniques are used in conjunction with a fax delivery system to, as part of a connection established to perform a fax transmission, provide a variety of functionalities to a human recipient that is participating as part of the connection, such as when the human recipient is contacted in error. In addition, in some situations an interactive voice response system is used to receive and interpret input from a human recipient, such as in response to one or more control selections or options provided to the human recipient.

  • Patent number: 8245882
Abstract: A wine pouring spout that aerates the wine pouring therethrough comprises a generally tubular construction with a flow path extending along the axis of the spout. The flow path is provided with a Venturi constriction, and a Venturi intake port delivers ambient air to the low pressure zone of the constriction. A separate displacement air intake channel feeds displacement air into the interior of the wine bottle to replace wine discharged from the spout. The Venturi intake port includes a Venturi jet bushing with a jet passage therethrough. The Venturi intake port and the displacement air intake are located within a hooded rectangular housing extending outwardly and provided with a distal air opening. The housing directs ambient air to the Venturi intake port and the displacement air intake; and it catches any wine drops that may escape from the Venturi intake port.

  • Patent number: 8250329
Abstract: Write requests from host computers are processed in relation to a thin provisioning storage subsystem. A write request is received from a host computer. The write request identifies a first virtual disk that has been previously assigned to the host computer. It is determined whether the first virtual disk has to be allocated additional physical storage locations of the thin provisioning storage subsystem for storing data associated with the write request. In response to determining that the virtual disk has to be allocated additional physical storage locations, the following is performed. First, a quantity of free space remaining unallocated within physical storage locations of the thin provisioning storage subsystem is determined. Second, where the quantity of free space remaining unallocated within the physical storage locations satisfies a policy threshold associated with a second virtual disk, the second virtual disk is write-inhibited. The first and second virtual disks can be different.

  • Patent number: 8250363
Abstract: Secret random data is distributed to a plurality of devices to provision them with new one-time pad data for use in interacting with apparatus holding the same one-time pad data. This distribution is effected by provisioning a first device with a block of secret random data that is, or will become, available to the apparatus. Part of the secret random data is then distributed from the first device to one or more other devices in a hierarchical distribution pattern headed by the first device. Each device, other than those at the bottom of the distribution hierarchy, retains part of the secret random data it receives and passes on the remainder. Each device uses that part of the secret random data it has retained to provide the device with new one-time pad data. A method is also provided for tracking service usage based on the distributed one-time pad data.

  • Patent number: 8250220
Abstract: A system and method for identifying network endpoints that provide a service of interest orders endpoints according to their network proximity to a requesting client. The requesting client may then contact the closest available providing endpoint, thus increasing the efficiency of usage of network resources while decreasing latency and enhancing reliability. In an embodiment of the invention, when a connection to the nearest providing endpoint cannot be established, a mechanism for locating a next-closest alternative endpoint is provided.

  • Patent number: 8245392
Abstract: A method of making an electronic package designed for interconnecting high density patterns of conductors of an electronic device (e.g., semiconductor chip) and less dense patterns of conductors of hosting circuitized substrates (e.g., chip carriers, PCBs). In one embodiment, the method includes bonding a chip to a single dielectric layer, forming a high density pattern of conductors on one surface of the layer, forming openings in the layer and then depositing metallurgy to form a desired circuit pattern which is then adapted for engaging and being electrically coupled to a corresponding pattern on yet another hosting substrate. According to another embodiment of the invention, an electronic package using a dual layered interposer is provided. Also provided are methods of making circuitized substrate assemblies using the electronic packages made using the invention's teachings.

  • Patent number: 8246706
Abstract: A device for facilitating rotation of a mattress in a plane formed by a box spring where slick surfaces between the mattress and the box spring are placed in contact to reduce the friction between. The slick surfaces are provided by a first cover for the top of a box spring and a second cover for the bottom of the mattress. The first cover is provided with a slick upper surface and non-slick bottom surface while the second cover includes a slick surface that faces downward. The first cover is attached to the box spring with its non-slick side is in contact with the box spring and its slick side is in contact with the slick side of the second cover of the first cover. A levitation device forms part of the second cover and includes an air supply that creates an air cushion between the mattress and the box spring which lifts the mattress and allows the mattress to be rotated.

  • Patent number: 8248301
Abstract: The present invention is related to location positioning systems, and more particularly, to a method and apparatus for using satellite state information from two or more different satellite systems in navigation processing. According to one aspect, it makes use of GPS extended ephemeris functionality to produce satellite state vector estimates for GLONASS satellites. These satellite state vector estimates can be used alone or in combination with GPS satellite vectors to provide updates to the receiver's navigation processing. According to further aspects, the GLONASS satellite position and trajectory information is extrapolated with a GPS gravity model rather than the GLONASS model, thereby allowing it to be extrapolated more accurately and for longer periods of time than the GLONASS model allows.

  • Patent number: 8247223
Abstract: The methods are disclosed to introduce catalysts and fluids into an apparatus and/or media to effect remediation of contaminants, improve soil fertility and permeability, control undesirable pests, or create useful chemicals or food. Aerobic metabolism of compounds in a media is facilitated through the transfer of fluids, such as air. The apparatus and methods provide an environment for select organisms, including refugia and nutrient substrate. The biodegradable composition of the apparatus is partially transformed by catalytic treatment. Catalysts or remediation agents are produced in-situ, for specific applications that provide a range of retention, activation, activity, and release profiles.
